Mnsshp

No ideas here, but I want to keep you question alive. I'll be going to MNSSHP later this month. pirate:

These will be mostly night shots, so would everyone recommend that I get my external flash before this trip - sorry if this is an "obvious" question; don't know if (a) the built in Rebel flash is "good enough" for outdoor night shots (haven't tried it yet) or (b) if it is worth "lugging" around the extra flash.:confused3

I seriously doubt that a flash is going to help you out with your night shots at MNSSHP.... The things you will be taking pictures of will be out of flash range and/or flash prohibited....

Invest in a tripod, even if it is just a small one to set on top of a garbage can. That will hold your camera steady while you use a longer exposure time to capture your picture.

Also, figure out how to move your ISO settings to the highest you can, If you dont know already, that will help in the dark pictures as well.

Instead of getting the external flash before this trip get the 50mm f/1.8. The Canon version can be had for something like $80. Choose ISO 1600 and aperture priority choose 1.8. Though you might want to pay close attention to the shutter speeds your getting. You might also want to choose Manual and set aperture to f/1.8 and shutter to 1/40th, but that is only after seeing what happens with aperture priority. You might be pleasently surprised at the shutter speeds you get in Av.

The 50mm will be kind of tight so becareful where you are standing relative to where the pics will be taken. Sigma makes a 28mm f/1.8, but that runs about $250. I don't know what specific lenses Canon has in this range and aperture.
