MM setting mat - is this normal?

Another newbie question! One of my big  purchases today at J's with the 40% coupon was the Making Memories setting mat for 3.49. (I'm telling you selection was baaadddd). The mat is 4''x4'' and black.

Anyway, I've never tried setting an eyelet before or punching a hole. And I've never seen anyone else do it yet (I better get to a crop soon!) So I decided to try my new tools out (50% coupon was used for the MM tool kit). I used the hole puncher with some sb paper and the mat underneath. It made a round dented hole in my setting mat! Is that normal? I'm just thinking that after a couple dozen whacks this mat is going to look bad.

I wondered, too, why they call it a "self-healing mat" because mine sure doesn't heal itself!

I don't really end up with a dent from setting the eyelet, but every time I punch a new hole I get another "ring" in it. :confused3 Seriously, I'm not sure how you could cut holes with it & not make marks in the mat.

The same exact thing has happened to me. I don't want to use it because it looks like it will get ruined fast. But then I think, I might as well use it instead of letting it just sit in a drawer.

next time just use a mouse pad -
same thing and you can grab a free one somewhere I am sure ;)
although I love the tiny one that came with my silent setter ;)

A mouse pad! Thanks for the tip. :goodvibes I do have a bunch of free ones I've picked over the years.

Same thing happened to mine. Then I went to an all day crop and they gave us a plastic one. Sooo much better! It's made of a clear plastic and it's in the shape of a square. It's great because it's hard so the eyelets set much better!

The marks in the mat are normal...and as long as I've been using my MM setting mat it hasn't caused any problems with what I'm trying to do. ;)

And hey would'nt you rather those marks be on the mat...and not on your table? (yep I have a few of those)....

Anyways.... I've been using the same mat for as long as I've been doing eyelets...and that's been a long time. ...at least 2+ years...and the mat still has a LONG way to go befor it's of no use. :teeth:

Okay, all this talk of eyelets, made me go out and purchase the tools & eyelets!! :confused3 I think I spend more time on here reading about how to scrap than I actually do scrapping. But boy, I'm ready!!! :teeth: Now, if I can only get away from the computer to start!!! :rolleyes1

I know what you mean! :teeth: DDIL stopped in last night to show me her new car (old one died on the way home from her grad class...poor thing was stuck on the side of the road at 11:30 at night!) and I showed her all my neat swap stuff. She then asked how many pages I've actually finished  ....she gave me a hard time about it, but admitted her mother is the same way. She keeps buying stuff to use, but isn't finishing her pages. ;) Except she isn't a Disney nut...she's a QVC addict. :teeth: So she's spending as much as I am - just at a different place. ;)

Thanks! That's exactly what I wanted to hear! I'll continue "ruining" my new mat knowing it's perfectly normal and will still work fine.

:rotfl: :rotfl: I've finished one page. Total. Thats it. I started scrapping (or should I say collecting for scrapping) in November. I've finished one page. :rotfl2: I have ideas for more pages, but am waiting for my shipment of stuff to arrive. :) I really hope that I can leave the DIS for at least an hour to go finish some pages this week. :badpc:

The mats are self healing. When you punch the hole, and it makes the ring, it heals back together. You can still see the ring, but it's not bumpy. It keeps doing this so the only t hing it does is make it look bad, it still works fine. I love mine!

I love the mousepad suggestion!

I have had mine for several years and its still going strong.
