MLS signs 2023 deal with Apple

No one is losing their job because of this.
Yes they will. MLS will be doing the production for every match. Most of the people hired at each local tv station (commentators, producers, film crew, assistants, etc) will not be needed anymore. Let’s say that’s 10 laid off people per team times 28 active clubs= probably close to 280 people. It probably will be less depending on how many people MLS will hire in their new centralized location model. Unless the clubs are going to spend on production themselves, a lot of people are possibly going to lose jobs.

You think local TV stations hired people SOLELY to produce the MLS games? That's not how sporting events work. 95%+ of the crews doing the production of the games are independent contractors. They really don't care who is actually broadcasting the game. They may/may not be employees of local TV stations, and if they are, they are working these games as "side gigs" for extra money. Some people do these kind of gigs "full time" and go from event to event.

Even *IF* a local TV station did the production for an MLS game, those crew members will have other responsibilities for the station. Producing the games will not fill hour a 40 hour work week. You're looking at a 10 hour (maybe 12) work day for each game day. They'll have what, MAYBE two home games in a week? So how do they fill in the other hours... by doing other work at the station.

I hope your right. I would hate to see people lose their jobs. I listen to a lot of soccer podcasts and a multiple of them talked about layoffs.

And if it's on a podcast, it must be true? There is not enough production in the soccer games to keep someone employed full time. Therefore, even if it IS local employees (which I highly doubt), they'll have other responsibilities.

I signed up with Peacock for the sole purpose of watching more EPL games. I loathe Apple as a company so it will take more than the MLS to get me to sign up.

The podcasts I listen to have sources within the MLS and some are professional soccer reporters.

At least we can still follow games via radio and the MLS website (plus whatever games they put on FOX/ABC/Univision).

And that makes them knowledgeable on how the broadcast production is accomplished? I used to be part of the broadcast crew for Kentucky basketball. I still know people who are in the field.

Thanks for the input.

People want to watch on cable if they have it. Only cord cutters are celebrating this.
We were unable to watch our team on cable. They had already sold their rights to Bally Sports. We were not going to pay another service on top of cable and ESPN+. It was a random game that was picked up by the networks for us. At least with Apple (which we've managed free for years) there are lots of other good programs on it. We had no need for Bally so rarely could watch on tv.

So perhaps with so many markets offering it all different ways it was a uniform way to offer to all.
