That's different though because its different at every airport (or even the same airport based on crowd levels). Some requires shoes off, some lets you keep laptops in the bag. Not every security line has someone saying whether or not shoes off/laptops out is required, and some don't even have a sign anymore.

(but I get the sentiment. If people went in prepared it would be much quicker)

You can tell pretty quickly by what the people ahead of you are doing. To say you dont know to take off your shoes when you have watched the 10 people ahead of you do it is a little silly.
