Does anyone know what time the train starts running at MK? I read about doing rope drop and taking the train to avoid the mass of people, but I only read it on one site. Seems like it would be a good idea if it actually is running that early. Thanks

It starts at (or very near) "opening time."

In the past, the major crowd was bunched up/pent up at the train station area awaiting the opening (of both the park and the Welcome show.)

NOW, virtually all of the people are gathered at the castle hub where the new Welcome show runs,
and where the ropes hold back the guests set to enter the attraction areas.

The train would not be "faster" to get to deep inside Frontierland (near Slash and BTM,)
and definitely not faster at all to get to Fantasyland (near Barnstormer,)
but riding the train would save walking/sprinting WITH a major crowd at
opening time.

In short, it wouldn't be a major advantage, one way or the other.

In the past, when the opening show was at the train station, taking the train might have been faster if you were headed to the back of the park (not sure that really true).
Now that the opening show is at the castle and everyone gathers around the hub to go to whatever land they want to get to at RD, taking the train would be much slower.

Thanks for the info everybody, I thought there must be a catch for more people not to choose this route. My only WDW experience was last year during Presidents Day week and the crowds were crazy, 60+ min wait for IASW and the Carousel. Hoping my September trip this year is better.

I'll echo what others have said. The train is a fun trip, but it is slower than walking. If you don't mind being behind the rope drop crowd, then it is fine. If your goal is to be on one of those rides quickly, before the line builds up, then I would say to stand in the hub area, near the entrance to which ever land you are heading for, and walk when the rope drops.
