Mixology

We did a regular class in Skyline with Lindsey on the Fantasy a couple weeks ago and had an experience like thegales. Lindsay demonstrated one drink and then 5 people made drinks for the rest of the class. Everyone made their own last drink- a Guinness shot.

We really enjoyed it, but doubt we would have if all of the drinks had been made like a couple other posters mentioned. That doesn't sound near as fun.

I had my class with Lindsay too. She is awesome. After doing the Mixology class we kept heading to Skylines when she was working to hang out and watch her work and learn more drinks.

On our cruise we had a lot of people so there were four or five separate groups for the private mixology. They all did different drinks, though maybe two groups did the same. Impossible to say in advance what you will have. I don't even remember what we had, but they were all pretty good. When you got there the five small drinks were premade and sitting at your spot. The bartender had three volunteers come up for each drink to mix a regular-sized version, which they got to keep. I also did a chocolate/liquor pairing and it was the best!

I am racking my brain and I know one of the drinks was a Bahama Mama made with Malibu. Another one was a shot that involved Kalua, Baileys, and something else. One involved sweet and sour and Sprite. One was green... I thought it had Midori but it turned out to be Blue Curacao. The last one had tequila. We had a lot of no shows because the timing conflicted with a popular event - so they made us drink the extras! I was fuzzy by the end and not best prepared to remember it all. :)

We did a Mixology class on the Dream last November and enjoyed it. Three of the drinks were pre-made by the bartenders and smaller versions than if you ordered one. They were a Bahama Mama, margarita and some type of martini that I don't recall. We made our own Mojito and a layered shot. At the end they drew names to award the full size of each drink. We enjoyed it enough that we did a second Mixology after the bartender said the last day she was going to change some of the drinks. The second time was the same set up of 3 smaller pre-made drinks (dessert martini, Tropical Depression, and a Brazilian drink I don't recall the name of), a mojito and a different layered shot.

The bartender said that they are given a list of what alcohol they can use, and the bartender makes up a list of drinks. So I guess it varies by bartender.

We did a private mixology class on our last cruise. There were 23 of us (supposed to be 25, but a couple didn't show). The setup was for full sized drinks for everyone.

5 of us at a time went up and each made 5 drinks (one for the preparer and 4 others).

We made Muddled basil martini; Japanese iced tea; champagne cocktail; Texas margarita; and a shot (either Kahlua, crème de Cacao white, Bailey's, or Tiramisu)

And a good time was had by all.

Where and when do you sign up for these classes? Been on many dc but never tried them! Sounds interesting.
we have a nice lady from our group organizing it you need at least 25 people max 30 for a private one you set it up before other tastings you have to wait till you get on the ship to book ;)

I may be in the minority, but I want to share my opinion...

We did not do a private class, but I was quite unhappy with my experience. The drinks were made and passed out during the first few minutes of the presentation. The only one that was okay was the mojito. I think there was a Tom Collins too that wasn't too dreadful. The other three were terrible. Definitely no appletini, shot, or mai tai.

We were on the Wonder and I could not understand the man who was doing the presentation. He spoke very very fast and had a very thick accent. One person asked if we would be mixing any of the drinks and the guy said it wasn't allowed? We had less than 20 people in our session.

The space where we had the event (Cadallic Lounge) was boiling hot and the drinks were sweaty from the git-go. We were between two other couples who were also greatly disappointed with the event. We ran into one of those couples later in our cruise and they had complained to Guest Services and ended up getting a refund and a note of apology in their stateroom. We just figured it was $40 wasted and moved on.

I would not do it again. Next time, I might try the wine or champagne tasting, I've heard good things about both of them.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but just wanting to share our feelings. I'm glad to hear others had better experiences, maybe it was just a rough day for our folks.

I hope you have a super cruise!

I am actually glad to see this. I was thinking maybe I was crazy..lol. I have been trying to get into a mixology class for the past 5 cruises. They either werent offered that cruise or at bad times. This time I finally got in and was sooo stoked. Well, we had a similar experience to you. The 5 drinks were passed out and I could hardly understand the guy. Only two people got to " mix" a drink. He didnt even tell us what we were drinking until half way through. 3 of the drinks were TERRIBLE and I LOVE mixed drinks. One he said was a bahama mama...it was definatley not ( yuck) It was not fun at all. I only got to drink the 2 drinks and I left at the end feeling so sad. I am not one to complain because a bad experience on a cruise is always better then a great day at work =)... Im glad others had better experiences then me though.....

Wow, interesting. In the two private ones I've done none of us got to make drinks (the bartender did them and they were set out when we arrived). I've stopped doing private mixologies because of it--much more fun to be behind the bar making the drinks. It might have to do with size. The two private ones I did were really big groups versus the Disney ones which are cut off at 25 i think so everyone gets to make a drink. Yours sounds much more fun :)
The only mixology we have done where everyone got a chance to make drinks was on the Fantasy. By far my favorite tasting! :)

On our cruise on the Magic, they made a bubble gum martini (didn't taste like bubble gum to me), B-52, Double Crowned, mojito, and one other drink that was something mixed with beer. Not my favorite choices. But it was still fun! We did get to muddle the limes for the mojitos. The B-52s were yummy!

We were just on the Wonder. The bartender said on the Wonder and Magic they make the drinks and the groups are bigger. While on the Fantasy and Dream, the people make the drinks and the groups are much smaller. This fits with my experience. I will only do mixology on the Fantasy or Dream in the future.

I was just on the Fantasy last week and we had a private mixology class for our cruise meet group. We had a blast! Ours was in Skyline and run by Laurence. Class members made all the drinks. We had a Bahama Mama, Aperot Spritz (my least favorite), Berryoska, lemon vanilla martini (a Laurence special concoction), and a Baby Guinness shot.

We had 30 people signed up for the class (the maximum), but only about 20 showed up. Upside was that they were already set up for 30 people so the first couple drinks had extras made so some people got seconds.

We did the mixology as a FB group on the Dream in October and they had them made for us already. So, it might not be based on which ship you are on, but based on the bartender instead.

I have found that on the cruise tastings, they consisted more of sitting at the tables and having the bartender explain things and waiters handing out the drinks. Not my favorite. I can understand with the tequila and rum type tastings but the idea of mixology is to MIX!

I've attended private tastings both on the Magic and the Fantasy. Each time was cruiser participation. At the mixology last September on the Magic we made a Bubblegum, chocolate cake, pineapple upside down, incredible hulk and a layered shot. At this one five people went up for each drink and made the drinks for everyone in the group. On the Fantasy in October 2012, they had stations set up around the bar and small groups went around to each station and we each made our own drinks. They were both fun!

On our WBTA we did have a private mojito tasting that was more like a lecture and not on mixing the drinks. The organizer of this group (and she organized many other tastings) complained (she actually arranged with the Magic on the 2010 WBTA to have the first Mojito tasting so we know what they can and can't do) and the head beverage person arranged for a separate private tasting where we had a blast!!
