Missouri Disneyfans lend me your EARS

I know this is a little off topic but I live in Maine and may go to a conference in Kansas city next July. (It depends on the price of air travel.) What are the big attractions in your state? I have emailed for a free travel guide. thanks

This type of thread is a better fit on the theme parks community board, so I'm going to move it over there.

Well, eat BBQ when you are here, you won't regret that...

Jack Stack, Arthur Bryant's, Gates and Zarda are my favorites!

The Plaza is a nice shopping and eating area.

Westport is a bar area and has been taken over by young'ins.

Amusement parks here are Worlds of Fun (it ain't Disney) and Oceans of Fun..

The Power and Light District downtown is shaping up, eating and shopping area near the new Sprint Center, which has concerts...

If you are into History, you could rent a car and see the Harry Truman Library in Independence (about 20 miles from downtown) and his home where he lived with Bess until he died in 1972. It was actually her family's home.

You can see Wagon ruts from the Santa Fe Trail all over, but mostly on the Kansas side.

If you are bringing kids with you, the Crown Center area has quite a bit to do.

Let us know your interests and we can tell you the not to miss spots and the might as well avoid spots too!

Another Mo family here :wave2: I am in Arnold which is about 30 minutes south of St. Louis. We are headed back to WDW in 18 days :cool1: We drive I like to have my own car down there. We leave around 5 in the evening around 10 we stop so my DD can use the bathroom then she settles down for sleep and me and my wife drive all night she will wake around 8ish in the morning we usually find a Shoneys since we dont have them anymore eat and stretch out legs then roll into WDW around 1 in the afternoon hopefully. The big thing for us we dont keep the TV in the van year round she this is a special treat for my DD and it really grabs her attention.

Hi, Tiffanykc and MickeymaniacMom! We just moved to Overland Park! We're going to WDW! The funny thing is, we moved from a city about 30 minutes from Disneyland, and we still went to WDW every other year. WDW is so much better than DL!

My question is, are we out of our minds to consider driving to WDW from here? Dh is thinking of driving just for the life experience. Ugh! I'd rather hop on a 2 hour flight, but maybe he is right. The kids would be able to see part of the Country...

I have never actually made the drive until this year. This will be the first time and I am positve that it will be insane to drive rather than fly! Keep your fingers crossed for me! I hope you can convince DH to fly...good luck with that!

I was born in MO, currently live in KS and work in KCMO. I grew up in central FL and consider WDW to be my "home" park. I usually visit it two or three times a year and make a trip to DL once or twice a year. :)

Another MO Diser. I can't believe there are so many people from Missouri on here, what a small world! ;)

We are from Cape Girardeau, MO, about 2 hours south of St. Louis.

We have been to the World 10 times and are going back in 16 days.. WAHOO!

Bluorchid! What are the odds that we are going to be in WDW at the same time?!?!?!?!? Are both the kids going with you? DD and I are solo this time, the boys will go with the whole family in 2010. I admit, I never got it when you talked about WDW but I have seen the light! ;)

Amazing!! I sent you a PM. :goodvibes

Pretty amazing that so many of us from the land-locked show-me state are WDW lovers! You would think we get enough humidity right here at home!

Thanx to the OP for starting this thread! :thumbsup2 It's really interesting to browse through it and see how many DISers live in communities very near me or places where we go to visit wineries, shop, float trip, etc.!

My upcoming trip is still/just 2 weeks away!

I remember fondly seeing another person from KC riding the monorail from Epcot to MK and we thought what a small world it was to see two families from the middle of the US sitting in an almost empty monorail on one May day.

Then it happened again for us when we sat next to a family for KC again at Fantasmic on our 1st visit to Disneyland on October evening. How cool is that?

Anyway keep the thread alive my fellow Missourians!!!!

KCmike

Oh, DH just told me about that. What a bummer. That would have been a boost in the economy. At least they are building a Schlitterbaun.

I was so excited to hear that. The kids and I always watch the show about the water parks on the Travel Channel and I thought we would never be able to experience it. Very cool that one is coming here.

Schlitterbahn should be a big deal. It would have been nice to see Legoland as well though. How about a Disneyland midwest? I can dream can't I?

Anybody here from Columbia? Dh is considering a job change and moving there :guilty: :sad1: (only lived out of St Charles in college - Cape G) I know it isn;t that far but I don't know anybody there and have only visited when DH was in Med school or during a football game- help !

Well, lets see I grew up in Independence, MO (inside KC), but we moved to St. Louis for 3 years after I was married. We then moved to Tennessee, Louisiana, Texas, back to Kansas for 1 year and now I am in Iowa. I live about 4 hours from KC and my parents still reside there so I go back often.

I love the Disney World area and would love to reside there if I could find decent employment, otherwise, it will have to wait till retirement for me. We go to WDW about every 2 years...but I am trying to shorten that up a bit. We are going a year from now and plan on taking 2 weeks there.

We drive every time because we take too much stuff for the plane!

Anyway, I have enjoyed reading all the posts about MO and WDW...I haven't been to Disneyland since I was 5...so I don't remember it. I don't know if I will ever go to be honest with you.

Hey!! I'm about 60 miles south of you.. near New Madrid. Good to see another SEMO person on here. :thumbsup2

How about a Disneyland midwest? I can dream can't I?

If you haven't already done so, I highly recommend reading the book Walt Disney's Missouri: The Roots of a Creative Genius by Kansas City Star reporters Brian Burnes, Dan Viets and Robert Butler. Not only does it give a great insight into how Walt and his brother Roy (along with other notable early Disney luminaries like Ubbe Iwerks, Fritz Freleng, Carl Stalling, etc.) got their starts in Missouri, but it also devotes a complete chapter to the park that Walt had plans to build in St. Louis in the early 1960's. :)

But I never knew they had plans for the midwest. How different would things be if they would have done that!

I'm here! Just found this. I'm from Blue Springs and have been 25 times and leaving in two weeks! I was a travel agent so it gave me a great jump start on all my trips. Since leaving the travel industry, we still try to go as often as possible, about once a year. Glad to see all of you are so close!!

How many of us Missourians (KC on the kansas side counts too) have been to disneyland and Disneyworld?
