Epcot Guests to have Choice of Two Mission: SPACE Adventures

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., May 2, 2006 - By the beginning of summer, Epcot Guests will have two options when it comes to riding Mission: Space -- the original thrill attraction and a new version for those who prefer a milder ride experience.

The new version, which is created by turning off the spinning centrifuge, may be more suited for some Guests, such as those who are prone to motion sickness or have other conditions. Both versions will offer an exciting astronaut training experience through a dramatic story that invites Guests to explore a new world.

"By offering a second adventure, we hope to broaden the appeal of Mission:Space and enable even more Guests to experience the attraction," said Al Weiss, president of Walt Disney World Resort.

Signs posted in the queue area of Mission: Space will outline the difference between the two adventures and provide health advisories appropriate for each experience.

"Providing a choice between two ride options will help to further encourage all Guests to carefully consider posted health advisories when making their decision," added Weiss.

Mission: Space opened in August 2003. Since that time, 11.8 million rides have been given on the attraction, which simulates the launch, approach and landing of a futuristic spacecraft on Mars. The attraction is made up of four separate ride systems, each with its own centrifuge and programmable simulators.

Here's to the AMAZING Disney Imagineers who've come up with this idea!!! :drinking1

I'm a huge fan of Mission: Space, I love that ride! And I'd hate to have the intensity changed, to me that's the best part! So now people have a choice..very nice! All newbie's to the ride, or the people who can't handle the intensity can choose the less intense ride, while others, like yours truly, can experience the original ride!!

I think I'll throw them a party!party: Anybody else care to join!

Sounds like a good compromise that will hopefully satisfy both sides!!!

I love the ride but I didn't do it this year because on our last trip, the women sitting next to me got sick during the ride. Hopefully people will know their limitations and go for the milder ride and I will be able to ride again without the fear of riding with someones "lunch" all of the the place.

Yay!! I know that DS7 would love this ride, but he hasn't been able to go because I'm one of those people who gets motion sick if they try and read a map while sitting in a moving car! Now I can take him on this ride, and not have to worry about traumatizing the person sitting next to me!

Personally, I think this is a major cop-out. I like they are doing a light version, but I don't really think that the story of this ride has the strength to stand on its own without the thrill aspect. Let's hope I am wrong

I have never gone on MS because my sister went on it and it really runied her day. I also have high blood pressure so I knew I shouldn't do it. However, other then the spinning are there other effects, (i.e. like a vibration and some movement, or is the new version simply watching the movie in the capsule.

If that is the case, I don't think it would be worth waiting on line for. If they are other effects like a vibration and shaking during lift-off it might be worth it.

Can anyone tell me if there are other effects other than the spinning.

However, I do like the idea of having everyone be able to ride it.

Thanks.

I went on MS once, and that was enough for me. I guess I was wrong, I'll deffinetly try out the new version in August. I am very intrested to hear reports of what the new MS is like when it opens up.

From my understanding the light version will be sort of like Star Tours

I think it's awesome! I'm prone to motion sickness so I would have never even tried MS b/c I know I'll lose it. Now I can try the wimpy version and go from there. I'd like no other than to experience the real ride but am too afraid of getting sick and ruining the day!

Yeah, the capsule moves around a little to give the feeling of weightlessness. And at one part when you are "steering" the shuttle, it tilts back and forth with the movement. The spinning in the main part of the ride, but I'm sure they'd add more shaking and movement for people to still get the whole grasp of the ride.

This is such a good idea. That way more people, such as the motion sick ones, will be able to ride it! Hopefully, people will pay attention and ride the ride that is right for them!

This is perfect for people like me! Now I can try it out without getting motion sick! Woohoo!

I'm not sure about them adding any extra motions, not sure how they would "add" something to the mechanics of the ride at this point. What I heard was they would simply be turning the centrifuge off on some of the capsules. So you would only feel the motions that are already there. You would not feel weightless that comes from the centrifuge. Not being built as a simulator without the centrifuge I think it will be boring.

I am excited that they are adding this new option. I have never been on MS due to fear of getting sick! So, now I can experience it. :thumbsup2

But...I do have to say...I wish this change was not after the bad press the ride has been getting. :sad2: I do feel like Disney did this b/c they felt compelled to offer a "safer" version - even though the original was safe as it was. O well....I will enjoy the change! ;)

If the ride is like Star Tours, UGH, I got sick on that! Guess I'll have to pass! :confused3

Thats a shame...it's a great ride!! just go on and throw up in the
air sick bags :rotfl2:

BTW, MastonsO..you might want to fix your siggie..it's a mess!

I have high blood pressure so I could never ride this ride before even though I really wanted to. I am glad there will be another option. I can handle Star Tours without a problem.

Personally, I think they've had this in the works since before the death last month. This turnaround is a bit too fast after last month's incident. They know the attraction is popular, yet they also know that a lot of people haven't been able to experience, so now Disney has made it possible. I think it's a phenomenal attraction and am glad that they've done this for people like my parents who skipped it last week due to dad's high blood pressure. I think the ride will still be cool even without the sustained G forces because the story involved in the attraction is strong.

I've never been on the ride... and I have no idea what the layout is like inside.. but I get this image in my head that there are concentirc circles that spin to create a centrifuge? If that's the case, I hope the spinning circles are the one's on the OUTSIDE perimeter of the ride. If they are on the inside, I get this image of people puking and it flying back onto the people who are not? EWWWWW!!!! (I know, I am probably way off base, here.) :rotfl2:

When you ride, there are four people in each 'capsule' and the capsules are enclosed. So, if someone pukes, it would be just in that one capsule. Now, for the other three people in there....look out :rotfl2:
