Miss California.

she never said the R or D or I or ect.. Word...so how is that political?

Okay, I'm not even going to get into the rest of your post, I'll just talk about the part that was directed at my response.

Gay marriage is a political issue. Hence, why I said she was stating her political beliefs. But perhaps I should've said 'moral beliefs' instead.

I was keeping MY personal politics (/morals) to myself in my response, which was a response to the original question of the thread, nothing to do with the politics of the statement.
Anyways, I'm sorry if I'm coming across as rude or hostile, but I'm slightly irked that you took two words out of my response and turned it into something political when that was not my intention.

Anyways, like Sonya said, if there was a question about an issue that was just as hot topic as gay marriage and someone said something along those lines...I'd be just as upset.

For example if there was a question about immigration, if the contestant was asked something along the lines of helping immigrants or refugees and the response was
"I think it's great that in America there are many immigrants...[insert rest of quote here], but in my country, I personally don't believe we should be helping immigrants and refugees..."
SOMETHING along those lines...I think it'd be just as controversial.

Anyways, please don't take my example out of context, I know those are two very different things, but I'm just trying to provide an example of another "bad" answer in which a contestant alienates a large portion of the American population.

Sorry for the novel hehe. Hope at least someone got through reading that.

Just an off topic observation, but the new 'no political threads' rule is very difficult to work around when you've got so many opinionated people on a forum. :upsidedow

Okay, so are you all updated on this? If not, watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LPv9L6sy5c

Okay, I'm not looking at this at the political side of things. I understand that she believes marriage should be between a man and a woman. But the way she executed it was in such poor taste. You can say you don't agree with GLBTQ without being disrespectful, condescending, or rude. There are ways to handle it with grace.

Opinions on the execution, not the statement?

Gay Lesbian Bi Transgender.... What the Chris Dudley is Q?

I havent been able to listen to her speech yet because Im using an old desktop with outdated software(because the stupid fan in my laptop broke), I just wanted to come in here and lighten the mood and say that Miss NC(She's #1 in the USA and my heart...lol) and Miss California are HOTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!

When I get back later today I will try and get on my sisters laptop, so I can watch it, and then I will give you my opinion

How doesnt that make sense?...she saying that she thinks that its great that this country we can choose if want to have a heterosexual or homosexual marriage, but she believes that marriage should only be between a man and a women.

Its like saying that its awesome that a person can choose what type of political party they want to be, but you think that one political party is better

I don't believe that her statement makes sense because she says two totally different things.

1- "I think it’s great that Americans can choose one or the other."
and
2- "In my country, and in my family, I think that I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman."

What I took that as was that she likes that Americans have to right to choose, but she doesn't believe that in "her country" marriage should be anything other than that between a man and women.

But, here's the thing: doesn't she live in America? So, does she want them to have the right to choose? Or does she not?

THAT'S what doesn't make sense to me.

Quite frankly, I really don't care about what she believes. She can't change anything, so it doesn't really matter.

I thought when you said political beliefs you ment the parties and i personally believe that its more a moral issue like you said you should've had...thanks for clearing that confuesion up :goodvibes

I was just trying to help translate her speech thats all...and idk i havnt read any of the press releases after this statement, but she fumbles after saying in my country, so im pretty sure that she didnt mean to say that. I could be wrong though

Gay Lesbian Bi Transgender.... What the Chris Dudley is Q?

Q stands for Questioning. It's for the people who don't really know who they are yet. A lot of people go through this phase when they have to do a lot of thinking and become self-aware. It's the "am I gay/bi/lesbian?" phase.

And the other thing that threw me off in her speech was the "I think I believe" part. She thinks she believes something? She's not sure? That's a slip, either way you look at it. Yes, she could have changed wording, but that's something a pageant queen should know how to handle. If you make it to Miss America, you don't really have an excuse, you should be very good at public speaking and you should be used to having large audiences.

What a heated conversation! I did hear her speech, and I think that she seemed nervous, and sorta stumbled over her words a bit. I don't think anything was wrong with what she said, or contradictory. I think she could've responded better, but everyone stumbles over their words sometimes, and I applaud her for having the guts to say what she did in front of all America....and for even being able to speak in front of sooo many people. I for sure would've choked at my audition! :goodvibes

I guess I can appreciate her honesty, but her public speaking skills are really bad. I'm surprised she made it all the way to the Miss America pageant.

I just believe that if you're going to make a bold statement, you should make sure your speech is eloquent, coherent, and well-delivered. She made many contradictions and stuttered a lot, which seems like she doesn't know what she's saying or doesn't really want to say it.

Miss America should represent ALL of America, NOT just the majority! The majority should not rule this country, it should be representative of everyone's beliefs.

ITA. The way she said her speech was just...She should have practiced her answers more

I say this with all respect due, I don't want to start anything.I don't think it's possible to represent ALL of America.. seeing as there are many many many different beliefs, and I don't want her to be a two-face.

You have to be open to everyone's beliefs and willing to discuss them. Everyone of us represent America and how diverse it is, so you do have to represent all of us as Miss America.

I dont understand how you can represent all of America when its an opiononated(sp) question. She said it was great that you had the choice, but she prefers the heterosexual marriage...

I just dont understand how to represent a WHOLE country on something that is very diverse... :/

I mean everyone has their own opinions, we're all entitled to them for sure! And it's tough to keep them to ourselves sometimes, but I personally think that when representing an entire country, you should try to stay as neutral as possible when addressing a hot topic question involving your opinion. She would've been smart to just stop after "I think it's great that in America you have the choice"...and that's not just in regards to gay marriage, but also regarding whatever controversial topic being discussed in a situation like that.

I think addressing that there are two sides, but remaining neutral when it comes to your opinion....in a situation like that. IMHO.

...this.

Thank you Caitlin, you took the words right out of my mouth. :)

Oh, ic but that doesnt answer perez's question...

The original question was..."Vermont recently becomae the 4th state to legalize same sex marriage, do you think every state should follow suite? why or why not?"

So i guess she never really did answer the question, but idk it just seems hard to be neutral with out giving a good answer thats all

Brava, Caitlin!

Addicted.to.Speed, yeah she didn't really answer the question anyway. I think the ideal way to handle it would've been like "In America, we have the freedom to choose. I feel each state should said up their own guidlines and boundries for gay marriages." I don't think her personal opinion should've come in there at ALL! Some states may not want to legalize gay marriage - keeping with her opnion. Some stays may want to legalize gay marriage - straying from her opinion. Either way, both sides make up America, which is where the "representing ALL of America" comes in.

Does that make sense? It does in my head but I'm kinda drowsy right now. Sleep is calling my nameee........
