An older family member asked me for computer help earlier today, and I was not able to play hero this time. - It seems that when they open their gmail, the "compose" window automatically pops up, and they'd rather it not. (They want it to open on the inbox.)

I did some Googling, found a suggestion to turn off "smart compose" features in the settings, and tried that, but it didn't help. (It seems that is for word suggestions, not the box itself.)

Does anyone know how to change this setting?

I use gmail for my email and as I recall it always shows my inbox when I open the application. I don't recall ever changing the way it looks. (I use Outlook, so maybe it depends on which product you use and/or which version).

New mail is a feature at the top left of the screen. Are there any buttons for 'settings' or 'configuration' where your application may let you change various things about how it displays?

Any chance they're using a bookmark to access Gmail?

Close the browser. Reopen the browser. Type gmail.com in the address bar.
If that doesn't work, open an incognito window and type gmail.com in the address bar (will need to sign in).

Yes. - I've been all through the settings and no "switch" I tried changing helped.

Yes, I'm almost certain he was!

I will try this next time I'm over there! Thanks :goodvibes

Guessing the bookmark has the "code" to open the "compose window". I just tested... here's the URL for my "normal" Gmail view...

However, here's the URL when the "Compose" window is open...

Sure enough, if I copy the second URL and paste it into a new tab, Gmail opens with the "Compose" window. Fix the bookmark, and you should be good!
