Yesterday, prior to the start of the big blizzard, I met up with Alisha in New York City. After several phone calls over a few days, we finally figured out a meeting spot. I asked her to meet me in Macy's at Herald Square. For those of you that don't know, this is the World's Largest Department Store. I directed her to go to the third floor and find Starbucks and I would be sitting there.
The scheduled meeting time was 12:30. Knowing traffic and delays in the transit system, delays are always understood. Around 12:50, I was starting to get antsy and wonder if I had been stood up, when along swept Alisha with a brilliant smile on her face. Customary to my name, I screamed a loud "Alisha Bay beeee." We were in NYC; no one noticed my loudness.
We did a quick perusal around Macy's and of course I made her ride the old wooden escalators. Afterwards she decided she wanted to go to the top of the Empire State Building. Now I knew it was going to be colder than a (nevermind), but she wanted to go up top, so off we went.
We walked the few blocks over and our faces were frozen by the time we arrived. If you haven't been in the Empire State Building lately, security is very tight. It is much like going through airport security. You place your bags on the conveyor belt, and then you put your personal belongings in the tub and walk on through the metal detector.
Bags on Belt, threw some stuff in the tub -- BUZZZZZ
walk back. Realize my cell phone is in my pocket, throw it in the tub, walk through -- BUZZZZZZ
walk back
Now Alisha is viewing the NO KNIVES AND GUNS sign and starting to look at me strangely.
I take my disposable camera out of my pocket, toss it in the bin, walk through -- BUZZZZZZ
Now I'm wondering what else could be in my pockets. Or, should I be removing my underwire bra.
Finally, I figured out what the problem was. I had brought a pin for Alisha and forgotten all about it. The Security Guards examined that pin very carefully. I think they thought I was going to do bodily harm to someone.
Finally, after being in a state of undress in the lobby, they let us through. Now it took me about 5 minutes to get redressed and we headed for the elevators. We zipped up to the top (those elevators are FAST) while my ears were popping madly.
We went out on the observation deck and it was COLD COLD COLD. After 10 minutes, we had had enough and we were out of there. Took more time to go through the metal detector than we stayed up top.
I told Alisha she had to ride the subway, so down underground we went, and grabbed a train up to Times Square. We walked around a little and I took her into the largest Toys R Us that has a ferris wheel right inside.
We then went and grabbed something to eat, and it was time for Alisha to meet back up with her party.
All and all, it was a very wonderful day and I had a great time meeting up with a wonderful DIS'er.
