Congratulations on another Danskin triathlon! I do
love that event. I've never felt more supported and accepted -- aside from here at WISH!
Thanks Wendy!

It was great, but we definitely need a WISH group there next year!
Ah, a mentor! Can you tell me about it? I am so new at it all...but I'd really like to try.
Hmmm... I don't even know where to start. It is absolutely an amazing experience!

It really honors cancer survivors, and encourages women of all shapes, sizes, and abilities to dream big and do what they thought was impossible. The distances for WDW are shorter than any of their other races - 400yrd swim, 9 mile bike (which according to my garmin is closer to 9.5 miles), and 2 mile run. The swim starts on West Beach in front of the MK, and you do a triangle shape (going clockwise) in the seven seas lagoon. There are tons of kayaks, boats, and swim angels (people with noodles in the water) to help you if you have trouble with the swim. The bike takes you on the streets around the park - there are two fairly tight u-turns, but nothing bad. The run is entirely through the MK, finishing through the castle, down Main Street, out the entrance, turn to your right past the resort launch, and finish on West Beach.
Sally Edwards is the spokesperson for Danskin. She starts each wave in the water and gives you a little mantra to take with you during the race. Each wave of swimmers gets a different word. Mine this year was "I am a
fantastic swimmer" - fantastic being our word. She high-fives as many people as she can as you start, and she is also the designated last place finisher, so noone has to be last. Actually, coming in with Sally is the best place - everyone makes a "tunnel of love" for that last person, and the cheers are soooo loud!
During the expo, there is a course overview and a race day overview - both are GREAT, and should not be missed! The course overview really calms your nerves, lets you know some things to watch out for, and common courtesies when doing a tri. You go over the course and the transitions, and talk through any preparation needed that afternoon and evening (bike racking, etc.). For the course, you see that there is a no passing area when going in front of Grand Floridian and the Poly. They also tell you how to pass other bikers nicely.
Sally does the race day overview, and starts with talking about getting rid of the monkeys on your back - the main one being the monkey of fear. She has everyone stand up and high five all those around them, and say "You go girlfriend!" (You will hear this ALOT during the race.) She reminds us that the competition is not with each other, it is with ourselves, and we are to encourage and help others on the race course. She will talk you through how to set up your transition area, and how to successfully transition. (I'm still horrible at T1!!!)

The race is just amazing, and her saying is that the woman who finishes the race is not the same one who started the race - so true! Anyway, it's just a totally different experience from any other race you will do.
Feel free to PM me with any questions. I volunteered one year, and competed two years, so I'm starting to realize a few things to do and not do as I get more experience.

I'm happy to help you any way I can. I can't wait to do Danskin again next year, and it would be awesome to have a bunch of WISHers to do it with!!!
