Hi, Just returned yesterday and did 3 days at both parks.

Loved Return of the Mummy and Back to the future and many others.

Of course Disney and Universal both are way different from each other and both have their own uniqueness BUT I felt that the entrance service should be better at Universal and IOA.

On all three days that I was there, we arrived at 10-11 am, there were only 3/4 entrance lines open with huge lines and it was worse in the evening compared to disneys several entrances open.

When we went back at around 4 pm after a break at the hotel, there was only 2 lines open to enter with terrible huge lines and only 1 person checking bags with a huge line also. If this only happened on one day I would understand but it happened all 3 days so I figured that in the morning they keep 3/4 entrance lines open and in the evening only 2 open with one person checking baggage which is ridiculous because of the long lines of people.

I definitly did see the difference in worker attitudes compared to Disney where I saw more happy and smiling cast members. Didnt have any problems personally but you can tell the difference in service. EX: at entrance a couples card was not working and the lady worker just told them rudely to go to guest services since she has huge lines for people to get in. It was minor stuff but I could tell the difference. Another example was when we got coke at the stand, no thank you or anything and at disney they would say thank you and have a magical day and same thing happened at the pizza place in Universal Studios. I paid and just a sulken face without a thank you.

Also the prices of coke and such are higher at Universal. A coke bottle at a stand near the Mummy ride cost me $2.75 and $2.50 at Disney. The fudge in the Universal Candy store was $3.49 or 6 for 16.XX and at Disney it was $3.00 or $12.XX at Main Street Candy store. Candy Apples were priced differently for different flavors and stared at $3.49 and at Disney they were $2.99 for all flavors. But in fairness the Turkey legs were cheaper in Universal by about $2.00 and also Universal had sales and clearance racks in their stores and Disney did not.

As far as value for the tickets, Yes Universal has great prices like the Kraft deal I had gotten for $89 for 5 days but you can tell the difference in other areas like cleanliness and service with a smile which is worth paying for at Disney parks. Universal also is doing what Six Flags is doing, They are adding things like Rock Climbing for $5.00. I hope they do not add more of these kind of pay for extra fun things.

Also on the Mummy ride, we were in express line when a bunch of teenagers just cut in from the regular line and ran in front of us. I wanted to complain but figured since I have 2 kids with me, I didnt want to pick fights with mean looking teenagers but if I was alone than it is a different story . So yes there is a way to get from the regular line to the express line in the Mummy ride. It is very easy since it is dark in there. I saw where they cut and it is quite easy. The regulars to that ride probably know where it is also. By the way, This was our favorite ride. We had a blast over and over again with express feature from our hotel room key.

Also it is sad that they took away the whole tour from Nickelodeon studios. Now you go straight to the game.

FYI:

They also do not have front of line privileges for SHREK 4, Nickelodeon Studios, and a dinosaur ride(cannot thing of the name).

Overall the fun cleanliness and service of the employees is better at Disney but the Rides and prices are better at USF/IOA. You can tell the difference for paying the cheaper prices at Universal.

Their hotels are a different story though. Best Customer Service/ Best rooms and best overall themeing.:D :D

Just my personal opinion :teeth: :teeth:

First of all, I want to say that its nice to see a fair and balnced opinion, lemme make a few points, some to agree and some that will disagree.

1- I agree about the lines to enter the park alter in the day. Especially at IOA. 3pm-4pm, they have 2 lines open that are super long, I get impatient, turn around and enter Universal Studios via the Hard Rock entrance.

2- Nickelodeon tour gotten rid of because there's no reason to give a tour if no shows are taping there (which is sad)

3- I think Universal is a very clean park. Right up there with Disney. I would say cleanliness wise they about the same.

4- As for employees (cast members), Disney may have the slight edge, but much credit needs to be given to the Universal Team members. You can tell most of them love what they do and I really have no complaints (except for one attraction that will remain nameless where many employees don't seem to be there for the guest.) If you want to see miserable employees- go to Busch Gardens Tampa.

5- Its hard to judge prices, because I've seen things go for different prices at just Universal Studios!

I appreciate the fair and balanced look though, nothing is else than someone where Rose (or Mickey-) colored glasses.

Hi,

Thank for the tip about the entrance behind Hark Rock. We used it to go to Hard rock Cafe but did not know that I could use it to enter instead of waiting in those long lines. Great tip.

Also I did not say that Universal was not clean. It was. I said that the overall service and cleanliness encountered was at Disney.

But with one child who just turned 13, We sure will be spending more time at Universal than Disney since he loves the rides there more.

Lets hope Nickelodean starts taping soon and opens up the studios.:teeth:

Did you say no FOTL for Shrek? Someone posted something about this as a rumor previous, but it was stated as doubtful. Did I misunderstand or is there no longer FOTL for Shrek, and is this only temporary?

I thought that they were still allowing FOTL to Shrek for the hotel guests...I hope so. Maybe the lack of help might improve when more college and high school students start working. Unfortunately, I noticed last year that more of the public at Universal were ruder than at Disney. I had more people practically run me over at Universal. People in the same group would walk horizonal in a line and NOT move an inch. On the path back to the HRH I had to move off the path on to the dirt because no one would move. But we did have a woman light up and smoke her cigarette in line waiting for Tower of Terror at Disney. No one said anything to her, she looked pretty mean.

I was at US last week and we used FOTL for Shrek. You enter from the opposite side as the regular line.

I have seen some rude people at both parks. I was particularly unimpressed with a couple of highly stressed employees at Universal last fall, one at the spiderman ride and one at the shrek intro, but the majority were great. I have come across a couple of unfriendly employees at Disney too. As far as the people, I had some dirtbags cut us in line running from the regular line to the FOTL line on Dudley Do-right, but I have had far more people cut my children in line at Disney while waiting to get a picture taken with a character. I almost saw a group of women get into a fight last time at Disney when two women and their children decided to walk past the people waiting in line for character photos and the women put their children at the front. A group of women waiting with their children lit into these two and it got ugly for a few minutes.
Fortunately, I think that for every rude person we've seen in the parks we have met many nicer ones. A Japanese gentleman and his family on our last Disney trip was a facinating person to talk to and his family was extremely nice as we waited for an hour in line to see Ariel, and another gentleman on the DD on our Universal trip gave us all sorts of park tips as we waited in line.

No matter where you are, not all employees are going to be top notch.

As for Shrek, the no express thing was a two week test. I beleive the two weeks are almost up, but I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes a permanent thing. Hotel guests can still get express though as previously stated. We'll know soon enough whether Shrek will stay this way or not.

I was so upset that they did not have FOL during our stay June 8,9,10.

I looked everywhere for the express sign around Shrek but I did not see it anywhere and so I asked the employee and he just told me that they do not have Express for Shrek 4 "nothing less and nothing more but those exact words". That is the only ride we did not do because of the huge huge lines. It was pretty crowded during our stay there but when it rained it lessened the crowds quite a bit but not on Shrek.

I didnt know that they had a special area to let Hotel Guests thru. I should have asked the worker that I was staying onsite instead I just asked him where the express line was and he said we do not have Express for Shrek 4. I wish I had known that I could have gotten in with my room key. They need to let the room guests know during check in or something:eek:

Thank you for th honest review. No FOTL for Shrek? What is up with that? I hope DM can confirm this for us.

Thanks again!

Its been confirmed by many people, myslef included. It may be temporary though, we'll find out soon.

We're staying @ PBH, where do we go to enter Universal via the Hard Rock entrance if the lines are too long?

There is no regular Express for Shrek. Resort guests still get FOTL. You just have to tell a CM and they will show you the entrance. We were just there last week and heard that there was no express; however, the CM was quick to add that if we were resort guests that we would be given FOTL. The posted wait was 2hrs and it only took us about 10 minutes to get in.

As far as Disney vs. Universal, we were at Disney back in March for a week. The restrooms were the dirtiest we had ever seen them(and we have been 9 times in the last 10 years). My wife even refused to use one of them it was so bad. We encountered several rude employees at Disney where as on our Universal trip we encountered only one that I would consider rude. I personally feel that Universal treats their onsite guests better than Disney. Disney tends to take their guests for granted. As far as the entrance lines go, when we were there last week they had almost every gate open and there were at least 4-6 security guards checking bags. By the way, I am not trying to minimize the problems you had I am just giving my observations from when I was there.

There's a small pathway on the right side of the HRC (if you get to the steps, you've gone too far) that will take you reight up. It's near Nick Studios.

2 weeks ago I was going to shortcut through the HRC/Nick entrance and it was closed. Does that happen often?
They had just installed a permanent scanner that sat on the ground like a parking meter and revised the Shrek (express or hotel) . They were scanning everyone to provide a fairly accurate speed and volume count. Why would they install the counter then remove it in less than a week? To get an average daily trip count you would need a little more than a week? Pedestrian distribution has dramatically changed with the opening of the Mummy. No one goes down Hollywood Blvd (in front of T2) at opening which adds to the bottleneck between Shrek and Jimmy.

As for employees I have had a lot better luck at Universal. I have had a WDW jerk tell me that he was going to kick me out of the park for wearing a WDW nametag. I had a Poly clerk call me and my six year old a liar. On the other side at USO they are friendly and even confide in you. They recognize you from one trip to the next. I have had at least a dozen experiences where I felt USO employees went beyond the call of duty.
I told one USO attendant that some girls cut in line and he said that he saw them and he was sorry that he didn't do anything.
For some reason I see much better parenting skills at USO. I have been in lines at WDW where actions bordered on abuse.

Rescue Ranger is correct. There is no express but there is still FOTL for on-site hotel guests. I posted this on another thread but will repeat it for those who missed it:

Announced today: SHReK will not be an EXPRESS attraction for the duration of the summer season. Hotel Keys and GAP passes only. I am pleased.

Ok now this is bordering on parody....
