Mine Train without FP?

I've been planning my trip for nearly a year, but that also means that I've only been saving for that long (and I am not a wealthy woman with lots to save.) I paid for things as I could, and unfortunately that meant the last thing to get paid for was our park tickets. I was about 35 days out from the trip when I was finally able to make our FP+ reservations and there were no more available for the Mine Train.

We'll be there next Saturday (park hours 9am to 1am EMH). With the EMH, we have plenty of time to do everything we want to do, but DH gets antsy standing in lines forever. Any tips on best time of day to try to hit up the mine train without a reservation? Our plan was to be there when the gates open and head straight to the mine train first, but is that everyone's plan? Is it better to wait until the afternoon when people are eating lunch? Or wait until late at night?

1PM Yesterday (Sunday), I waited 30 min in Standby. We have FPs for Wed. Daughter wanted to ride it day one.

Besides that wait, longest wait has been 10 min. We rode Soarin' tonight at 8PM with 10 min wait.

At Sunday's MNSSHP, no waits any ride. Rode BTMRR twice back to back. SM: 4 times, no wait.

That sounds promising. Thank you!
