I have suspected for some time that my DS1 has a milk allergy -

he has always spit up a lot, only weighs 20 pounds and as we transitioned him to milk it became worse - my doctor told me it was unlikely b/c he didn't have a problem on formula and to keep trying milk

He gained no weight this month and spend five days vomiting last week so I took him back on Monday - I saw a different Doctor who told me he did not show signs of a virus and that he was going to go with my gut intuition.

so we switched to soy milk and took dairy out of his diet and I can't believe the difference in 4 days - so now I don't know what's next - we have to reintroduce milk in two weeks just to be sure and if so there will be tests done but the doctor told me most kids outgrow a milk allergy

has anyone had an experience where their child did outgrow the allergy? It doesn't seem like a major allergy right now - but can it grow? I have heard some children are deathly allergic to milk.

also - I am going to Disney next month - are there places in the park I can get him soy milk?

Also - I am so ridiculous that I am sad that he won't be able to have a mickey bar on his first trip to WDW!!!!

My friends two sons are allergic to milk. They are also allergic to all milk-by products, whey and cassein. She has to be VERY careful, since most breads (breadings too, so she has to be cafeful with chicken nuggets) have these by-products and they can't have them. If you truly think your son is allergic to milk and not lactose intollerent (a BIG DIFFERENCE) I'd plan on staying away from milk and all it's by-products. Based on what I know from my friend and what you've posted, I'm guessing your son isn't allergic to milk, just lactose intollerent. You'll just have to avoid most true milk products. Most places in WDW do carry either soy or rice milk, but you can always buy some in the juice boxes and carry it with you.

I was allergic to milk as a baby. My mom said I threw it up everytime she gave it to. I was given soy milk. By the time I was 6, I outgrew the allergy.

My DS became allergic to his formula at 5 months. He started with projected vomiting and believe me he could hit you from across the room. He was put on a soy protein formula and was fine. He is the only one of my three children that love milk and thankfully, he has outgrown this! He is now in his twenties....

What you really need to do is quit fooling around with your pediatrician and go to an allergist if you suspect there is an allergy. Food allergies are nothing to fool around with. In certain individuals, constant exposure causes the person to become more and more sensitive to the offending substance. What starts out as a more mild, systemic reaction can turn into full blown anaphylaxis which is very dangerous. I would NOT reintroduce the milk until you know whether it is an allergy or not. Go to the allergist and start with the skin prick test which is very simple.

Your son may be severely lactose intolerant which would explain the gastrointestinal symptoms. I think it's important to find this out for sure because you don't want this escalating into something worse.

Also, sometimes there are different levels of tolerance to different foods. If you son is allergic to milk, he may be able to tolerate milk when it has been in something that has been cooked making it much easier. My son is allergic to eggs and cannot have them just scrambled. But he can have cake, cookies, etc. Cooking and/or processing breaks down much of the allergic proteins in the food (for some people), so don't give up yet on that future Mickey Bar!!!!

Also...soy milk isn't very nutritious for young children. Use soy infant formula instead. Babies need fat & calories!!!!!!!

DD was sensitive to dairy (we never made it to milk, cheese and yogurt were enough). Her symptom though was ear infections.

I also followed my gut and DH's family history of sensitivity.

I nursed her for 9 months, then did soy formula. She was and is very small. 6 lb 15 oz birth weight. However, she never lost weight, and always gained a little.

We did soy formula until she was 2. (You may get some "don't give kids too much soy") She is now 3 and does dairy, whole milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, etc. and no more ear infections. She weighs 26 lbs., is healthy and tough as nails!!!

Our Dr. agrees with my gut!!

DS almost 13 months has not shown similar symptoms, knock on wood!

Good luck!!

When I was little, any milk other than whole made me very sick (ie no 2%, skim, etc.) I know it's a longshot, but maybe there's some kind of regular milk he is able to drink?
