Milk Allergies

My son, who will be one month shy of 4 when cruising, is allergic to milk and all nuts. Anyone cruise before with a milk allergy-what substitutes were offered? I'm guessing soy milk will be available, but how about for desserts, and breakfast is another issue. Were they able to make pancakes or waffles for you without regular milk? Where would you suggest eating breakfast? I've read to avoid Topsiders so which restaurant would be my best choice? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Gosh, I have no experience with these allergies, but it's an important question -- I would go right to DCL's customer service for answers.

The buffet breakfast is offered at Topsiders and Parrot Cay, a cooked to order breakfast is at Lumiere's. That may be your best bet, although there are items at the buffet that should be safe -- eggs (or are scrambled eggs made with milk?), bacon/sausage, lots of fruit, etc.

I would not assume that soy milk is available, as we have taken three cruises and have not seen it or heard it mentioned.

Good luck,

I had a lot of food allergie and have cruised with them with no problem.

I posted a question about food allergies, on cruise critic (a long time ago). The first thing you should do is you or your TA notify Disney about the allergy. The response I got on cruise critic was that the Disney medical department would contact you via phone and then meet with when you are on the ship.

My experience (not Disney) was that I would have my TA notify the cruise line and then I would go and see the MaitreD soon after I boarded the ship. Each evening they would give me a menu for the next night, so I could order what I could eat, prepared the way I needed it. If I went to the dining room for breakfast and lunch, they would also prepare food the way I needed it. I also talk to the MatreD about the food at the buffets and he would advise me about how they were prepared.

Pancakes are usualy made with milk, but eggs are not. Also you mentioned pancakes, in the dining room I am sure they would make them without milk for you son.

I think most of the cruise lines have soy milk available, but you should ask Disney to be sure.

Hope this helps.

Sue

call DCL immediately and ask them what you should do..
i would mention it again at check-in and yet again when you go to lunch on the first day (you board the ship and go straight to lunch)...
if you haven't been told otherwise (like given special instructions by DCL as to what you should do when you get on board) request the head server the moment you get into parrot cay for lunch....these guys are very very very well trained regarding allergies....the head server we had on the first day at parrot cay was a walking encyclopedia of ingredients of each and every item on the menu....it was amazing...

he sat with us for the longest time and went through exactly what we could and couldn't eat from the regular menus of each restaurant...
and then he showed us the special menu so that we could order from that if we wanted...

but as i said, first things first....call DCL and ask what should be done in the case of food allergies...if the person answering the phone doesn't know, ask for a supervisor, or someone who does know...

I just returned from a Disney Cruise after sending in the medical form regarding a food allergy. I had sent the form in at the time I made the reservation....about 19 months earlier. At the first dinner I said the the head and ***'t server"I'm the one with the allergy to xyz" They said.."Oh, we are well aware and will tell you each night what you can't order" and they did. At Topsiders I asked a question. They were aware that someone on board had that odd allergy and wouldn't let me pick out a dessert until the they contacted the dessert chef for verification of ingredients. At Palo I again said I was the one with the allergy and the server immediately said to avoid the xyz and stick with the xyz. It was wonderful not having to speak to a different restaraunt staff every evening explaining the situation like I do on a regular vacation. Even though Topsiders and Palo didn't know I was the one, they did seem to know 'someone' that week had that allergy and when they knew who I was went out of their way to be helpful.

As whoever you booked through to send you the form. Your child's doctor can fill it out if medical advice needs to be transmitted, or if it just needs to say my child can't eat this in any way shape or form, then you could fill it out. At one of our dinners our table mates had requested on the prior night a private ethnic meal for our table. Out came the most wonderful platters of food from his home country that you have ever seen. They can make things off the regular menu if you need it. Just make sure they know.
