Military relocation

Does anybody know that if an military engineer who is being relocated and cant sell his house will the government buy it from him.I am looking at a house and it is priced a little higher than local comps so don't know is they would want to negotiate if they knkow the military will buy the house.

The military does NOT buy houses!!!! If a military person wants to buy a house off base then that is their responsibility (problem) to sell it. The military gives you the option of base housing. In that case, when you get orders, the house is not your problem to sell.

Sadly, I have to agree with both LindaR and Longsx3. Right now, there is no relief for military members who can afford to live in their houses, but cannot afford to sell (like us). But the article linked by Longsx3 shows that there is perhaps some form of relief in sight. Since my DH is probably going to get orders within the next 6 months and we are significantly upside down in our house, I am curious to see what type of relief will be offered!

Hmm. We retired from the military in 1996, so maybe things are different now, but during our 20 years, the only people I knew in the military who actually purchased a home in an area were people purchasing homes that they intended to retire to when they got out of the military. Usually, these were in towns with military bases and when they got orders, they'd rent the house out to other military families. In the military, you know you're going to get orders every three years (or whatever it is based on your job and circumstances), so the only way buying a house makes sense is if you don't plan on selling it because you never know what the market will be like -- you could buy in a buyer's market (like the situation now) and then if you need to move, it could still be a buyer's market and you could spend months trying to sell it. I guess things changed, but for those who did buy and can't sell, do try renting it out. If you give a good deal to military families, you likely will be able to rent it out quickly.
