My parents are moving to Tampa in March, we are planning to do Disney with them in May or June, what Is available to the military since SOG is closed for rehab? Also, is the military discount for rooms and tickets better than the Florida residents discount? We have APs, they are going to buy APs also. Advice please.

Call the shades of Green. They might be closed but you will get some good information from them. They are doing some upgrading in Disney resorts.

You can stay at the Contemporary at a reduced rate. I am stayinf for $99!!!!!!!!!!:bounce: :Pinkbounc

pattyb- Does that apply to my parents and us? We would need 2 rooms.

We're paying $66 a night at the Contemporary. We are sponsoring 2 rooms- the rooms we are sponsoring are $89 a night. The cost depends on the rank of the military person (my husband is an E 5 in the Nat'l Guard- we qualified for the lowest rate base on the E 5)

Those are great rates! I'm excited I will get my mom to call about booking.

Your mom will need the military sponser's social security number and you will book under his/her name.

I maybe should've started a new thread for this question but there seem to be a few experts on this thread so I hope you don't mind if I butt in!! If my stepdad is retired military and my mother accompanied us to WDW would we be able to book a military rate? Would stepdad have to be present? Would my mom have to be present for the entire stay?

I think if he's actually retired, that is gets a military pension and has a DOD identification card then the answer is yes. If SHE also has a DOD i.d for getting onto base, shopping at Exchanges, etc. then she should be able to get the SOG discounts for you.

Yes he does get a pension and yes they both have cards!! That would be so cool!! I'm trying to talk my mom into going with dd's and I in October, this could be just the thing to get her to go. Does she need to be there with her card at check-in? She doesn't really want to go for the whole eight days and said she would maybe fly down after us. I suppose we could split our stay. How far in advance would we need to book?

One more thing, does she get any kind of discount on park hoppers for herself. DD's and I do not need them but that would be great if she could get them!!

I think she'll need to be there to check you in. And yes she can get SOG rates for her passes. Have her check SOG website if she has Excel (the prices are listed on an Excel spreadsheet) or call SOG for prices.

Keep in mind that you'd need to have her call NOW for booking a room or two for October. She might even need to waitlist, as the North Garden Wing at the Contemporary Resort books up really fast.
She could also ask about Overflow availability at other resorts, but do it soon!!
They have a toll-free number, and they also take reservations online at their website: www.shadesofgreen.org

Good luck!!

Just an FYI-
Your mother would have to be there at check-in, but not at check-out.
I was able to get a room in the Contemporary for January 4-7 just a week or so before Christmas. Remember, the holiday was extended due to most school giving 2 weeks.
Also, for those with Navy ties, MWR (on bases) has even cheaper tickets than SOG. SOG may be more convenient because you can buy the reduced rate tickets at the Contemp. Have fun!

Does anyone know the toll free number for SOG - my father-in-law
is interested about rates. Thank you.

The rates are posted on their website: www.shadesofgreen.org

Their toll-free number is: 1-888-593-2242.

However, the phone hours are from 8:30 - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. No weekends or holidays. Hold times are long, sometimes 45 minutes or so (they usually have maybe 3 people answering phones, or used to).

Good Luck!!!

Thanks so much for all of the helpful information you guys!! I hadn't even thought of military discounts for my Mom. I work at The Disney Store so I get discounts for me and my dd's but Mom's tickets were still an issue and I think her discount for rooms would be better than mine!!
