I just wanted to mention that my sister ( DISer ghcoughlin), is a Scout leader. Her troop is sending boxes of Girl Scout cookies to the troops! Her Pastor is also in the Reserves and will help her to ship them. Goes to show you we can all do something whether it's big or small to support our men and women in the military:D

Tell her to make sure to check with her council that there is nothing wrong with doing this. There are some strict problems that have been happening and GSUSA has had to get involved. If the troop purchased them, or a parent purchased them, and are sending themselves - that I think can be done, but if they sold them to specifically go to the troops, I think there are some problems being had with this. There are some states that various political parties are getting involved on how to send these and it has created some problems.

The only reason I know this is because we have had some problems in our council.

I personally think it's an awesome idea - but she needs to make sure there are no guidelines stating that they can't do this.

There was a whole mess on this. However, I think that people are getting around it by sending them to individual service people.
I actually don't think it was polititians, it was the Army mail service. People were just sending cookies to "any solider" Afganitan!

Hi! This is krisu's sister , ghcoughlin. Our troop bought extra cookies to have on hand to sell if people forgot to order them.Or to do a Cookie booth. So the girls decided they wanted to do their part and support the troops. You're right December 99 council can have some ridiculous rules. At least here in VT they do.When it comes down to it council wants to make sure those cookies are paid for.I saw on a site for the military Girls Scout cookies were one of the things the troops request. It reminds them of home.Plus they are all sealed up for security reasons. You can't send anything to "any service man/woman" anymore. It has to go through a legitimate clearing center .This has a laundry list of do's and don't's.Unfortunately it is very difficult to send packages. We are tracking down a way to send something over.Letters can not be in envelopes if sent in packages. So until then the troops will be in our thoughts.I just wish there was more we can do.

I just was cautioning you cause I would have hated to hear that something happened and then the girls got disappointed. I think it's ridiculous the restrictions they have had to put on but I can see why - they want to make sure our men and women are safe even from home.

Carol - in Illinois it was one of the political parties that were trying to go around things and were causing a problem - at least near our council. It's sad...

Thanks December99,I realized you were doing me a favor warning me of possible negative response from council.Usually they are so worried about being politically correct it gets in the way of girls , being girls. That is why I am a leader for my daughter's troop.I just want to make sure they are doing and enjoying the fundamentals and basics of scouting .

thanks for your concern :D
