Migraines in Adults?

I hope your DH gets some relief soon, as I sure feel his pain . I suffered terribly for many yrs, trying many different types of drs, therapies, monitoring weather and foods, also tried herbs, etc. I was not a candiate for triptans so my dr experimented with an inexpensive low dose of blood pressure med - atenolol. Praise God, it worked, I got immediate relief and thankfully I rarely get a HA!! I owe my soul to this dr !! I agree that in many cases a chiropractor can help. Good luck!

I can only agree with what so many of you have already said.

I am on Topamax and it has made a WORLD of difference in my life. Occasionally I will get a migraine now, especially around my cycle or if I've done something to my neck those I handle with massage and chiropractic and the occasional dose of a muscle relaxer or imitrex, other than that, it's the tompamax therapy. Please do as the others have told you and have your husband checked out with a Neurologist and then with aan Allergist.

Topamax, Topamax, Topamax! I can't say enough about it. I started it about 3 years ago and it has made all the difference for me. I used to have 2 or 3 a week on some weeks a month and now it is usually only at that time of the month. AprilShowers described the side effects perfectly but also there is a taste change regarding carbonated sodas. They won't taste the same. I just got used to the altered taste of my diet cokes and now I don't even notice anything. As far as the short term memory thing, it is really very minor. Sometimes I will be in a conversation and a specific word is on the tip of my tongue and I can't think of it and I just have to work harder to remember it. Sometimes when I meet new people I have trouble remembering their names. But, to not have the headaches anymore I have learned to work through these little issues and you can to. Some people refer to it as "Dopamax" but I just don't think it is that bad. My Ds (15) is on it also and the only side effects that he has noticed in the year he has been on it is the tingly fingers (and this is no biggy either) and the soda thing. His grades remain all A's and B's so....... I wish your DH the best.

If your DH is waiting until the migraine hits to take Imitrex in pill form, then it's no wonder that it takes a long time for the medication to kick in. One side effect of migraines is that your digestive system effectively shuts down. Pills take FOREVER to get into your bloodstream. Your DH should look into injectible or nasal form of Imitrex. Or he should take his meds at the first sign of a migraine.

Imitrex (in all three forms) has been a wonder drug for my DW Sue.

I really suggest an evaluation by a neurologist who is a headache specialist. DD had been using Imitrex prescribed by our pediatrician, but the headaches only got worse. Her neurologist took her off of all over the counter pain medications (which probably caused rebound headaches)and put her on preventive therapy. Then Imitrex pills and then the injection if the pills don't work.

And I agree with the dental evaluation as well. DD has suffered from migraines since she was a young teen - over 10 years now. Recently she went to a new dentist who made her a night mouth guard since she grinds her teeth. Since having the mouth guard, she has noticed a decrease in her migraines. So definitely something to look into.

My dr has me on Zomig. It works in about 20 minutes if I catch the migrane in time. The trick is knowing your trigger signs. I'd give it or another medication a try. There are several available. Hope he can find some relief. He might also want to talk to his doctor about daily medication since he gets them so often.
