My wife and I along with our 2 boys, who will be 9 and 7, are going to DL the week after Labor Day 2006. We are booked at the Candy Cane Inn but am looking for tips on air travel as far as fares and experiences from the KC area.

Check out Southwest airlines. No frills, but definitely one of the cheapest ways to go. We are using SW to fly 5 of us round trip from Chicago to San Diego around New Years, for 1124.00 total round trip.

Don't know much about flying from the mid west but if you can fly into Orange County airport (also called JOhn Wayne airport) it is much closer to disneyland then LAX and much smaller so less crowds.

From KC, I believe that Southwest and Midwest Airlines are the only two that have nonstop flights. They both fly direct into LAX. You can go to SNA/John Wayne, but it may cost more, and you will definitely have a connecting flight. So you'll need to think about what you want -- cost vs. connecting/direct flight vs. distance to DL.

I'm not sure if Midwest even has rates published through your time frame. I know they have them out through July, but the price is a little higher than I'd like right now. From what I've read on transportation boards, 3 months prior is about the right time to get a good price on flights. Southwest fares and schedules are published about 3 months ahead, but will probably be the least expensive option. I'm just not sure about doing Southwest out of LAX and leaning towards Midwest in order to get seat assignments and not worry about having to check-in early for seating.

Midwest Express did not fly into John Wayne airport. We had our tickets purchased and they rerouted us to LAX. The non-stop flight made it worth our while.

We (DS7 (soon to be 8 yr old) and myself) are flying into LAX via SW, for 2 reasons A) Non-Stop B) Price. I was able to get 2 RT tixs for 356.80.

This will be a first for us.....I'll have to report back after we go, we're still 2 months away (a birthdat suprise).
