We just booked 8/18 - 8/21 at VWL for a stay prior to our cruise on 8/21. What should I expect with crowds, we are just probably doing MK and maybe Epcot or a waterpark. Is it a busy time, I just booked today and was able to get a 1 bedroom, I was kind of surprised!

I did cancel 11/9-11/14 1 bedroom at VWL, so if you are waitlisted, this could be your lucky day!!!

I think you are in luck regarding the crowds. That is about the time of year things start to slow down a little at WDW from what has been said on these boards. There is a nice boat ride to Mk from WL, you can catch the mono-rail from MK to Epcot.

Kim, we just got our school schedule for next year. Our kids go back to school Aug. 10th. (ugh!) Florida schools usually are on a pretty similiar schedule to us. I would think a lot of kids will be back in school by that point. Hope you have a great trip. The worse thing you will have to contend with will be the heat. Those water parks will probably look pretty good to you!

Welcome, fellow Augustian! :) We will be at WDW on the 7th (BCV) then move to BWV on the 8th, then move to SSR on the 16th, then head home on the 20th. VWL and OKW are the only places we AREN'T staying this trip (although we do have plns to eat at WC while we're there!)

If you are doing MK and a water park, my main suggestion -- you may want to focus on TL instead of BB -- BB ain't called Blister Beach for nuttin. No shade, and in the August sun, yikes! And yet, that's the water park that will fill to capacity quickly. Every day when we were there, BB was filled, and TL still had "room". II wanted to know why so I bent the ear of an astute and freindly bus driver/CM at WDW on our last August adventure. He lent me his profound bits of wisdom. He figures the newness and thrill factors of BB make it popular, however, he contended, for August, TL was the better choice, hands down. There's no where to run/hide at BB and the sun is pretty intense! And all that glaring white everywhere too just magnifies the problem. We have small kids with us, and his feeling was if they don't wear sunglasses and sunscreen religiously, they will come home fried from the experience on a bright August day! Maybe he was exaggerating, or maybe he wanted my crew to feel better about going to TL, or maybe it was his job to recruit folks away from a crowded BB -- who knows? But we took his directives by heart and got an umbrella, chairs, and a great day at TL in the bargain, so who are we to complain! Try to put your water park visit at the earliest part of your trip, in your case -- they tend to get more crowded as the week progresses (namely, Fri-sat-sun). Not sure if it's Floridians with annual passes or just that there are folks there for a week that then save the water parks for "last" after they hit the 4 main parks -- either way, aim early! We did a Friday and it wasn't too too bad, but this trip we will hit both parks (and see if that driver was right or full of Hoo-Ha!) and we have them roughly slated for BB on a Monday and TL on a Thurs or Fri.

As for doing the parks in August -- to be honest, we found August crowds to be better than the week prior to xmas, definitely better than October, way way WAY better than July 4th or the week including xmas, but not quite as good as the first weeks of January. HOWEVER -- trouble with January is we have real puddle-ducks for kids, and last time we did a Jan. trip, it never got above 50 degrees! Brrr... No water parks THAT trip! My DH actually commented that he thought August was a pretty great time to be there, all thngs considered, as long as you focused on water (in ya and on ya!) (What can I say, he's the Senoir PuddleDuck I guess!) That said, however, it seems with all these promos and packages, crowds in general have picked up at Disney year-round so I'm not sure WHAT to expect. If you got a 1br this close in at VWL, however, maybe it won't be too bad! Schools start down south around Weeks 1 and 2 of August, so THAT helps. It's a terrible thing to admit, but I am hoping for ZERO dreammaker pkgs, or Visa perks, or whatever for August! I am a greedy lil' DVC'er, what can I say, and have been spoiled by the low park attendance!

If it IS crowded when we go, we plan to just take it in stride -- early in, early out, and back to the villa to swim and relax, then back in later in the afternoon / evening for dinner and night shows.

I see you are on the 8/21 Magic sailing. Please come over to the cruise board and find our Cruise Meets thread regarding the 8/21 sailing. My family will also be on board along with lots of other Dis'ers.

I knew I could get some insight here!!! I have 1 day left on my PHP's and 4 pluses left!!! DH may come down with us on the 18th or may just join on the 21'st for the cruise! We were just down in November and it was way too cold to swim let alone do water parks, and I wasted 1 day on my passes for the MVMCP, I didn't realize if I came in after 4:00 I could have used my MVMCP pass and not my regular pass!!! Bummer!!! Anyway, this should be fun, and worse case is we hang at the resort and play in the pools or hop over to the Contemporary, the pools there are great! (Can we do that??) Is pool hopping permitted at resorts other than DVC?

Sure, you can hop -- but phone before you leap, just to make sure they aren't at capacity. In mid/late August, I would bet the only place you couldn't hop to would be the norm (i.e. no SAB or Uzima at AKL). Anywhere else would be fair game!

And you southerners -- thanks for the heads-up on the school schedules! I admit was thrilled to hear about your schools starting back so early (Aug 10) -- I know it's a bummer for you (I feel your pain every June when our schools are still in session and you're out!) We were very concerned about going as early in August as we are, but couldn't push our trip any later. Our kids go to a parochial school and we start back a bit sooner than most of the public schools here in WV / Ohio area (they all start back around the very last week of August..the 30th.. we start around the 23rd). I grew up in SC so I know all about those early returns to school... my condolences to the kids, and I hope their classes are all air-conditioned! ;)

We've done the last 2 weeks of August several times. The last week of August is definitely better than the 3rd week, but both are better than late June and all of July. We also do the end of October into the first week of November quite often and found we like that best. I feel the end of August is more crowded than the end of October---but that's just our experiences.
Also, keep in mind the water parks can close down due to capacity during the hot summer months. It happened the 3rd week of August in '00 for us, as well as the first week of August last year. We got to BB and the sign was blinking closed at 10:45 am. So if you plan to do a water park get there at opening or within an hour of opening just to be safe. Oh, I should mention, that last year when BB was closed (it was Tuesday Aug 5), TL was still open but had a huge line of backed-up cars down Buena Vista drive---I mean sheer madness. We opted to hang by the pool that day.
Have a great cruise !
