Mid-May crowds?

Hey there! We are considering a 3 day Disneyland trip with our two year old but it looks like mid May (May 15-19?) would probably work best for our schedule. How are crowds in your experience? Also, Grad Nite is one of those evenings...how does that impact Disneyland/CA Adventure? Do they close early? Is it extra crowded? Thanks so much for all your help!

It's hard to say at this point what will be happening at that time of the year. My guess is that the weekdays will be better than the weekends (usually) and the summer crowds probably won't have started arriving yet. You might see some residual crowds from the Marathon weekend early on during your trip.

There are few different crowd calendars that get mentioned here on the Dis and it's usually worth looking at all of them to get a sense of what the crowds could be like. If all are saying it'll be crowded, then it'll probably be crowded. If they're split, then I generally think that means no one really knows what it'll be like.
Grad Nite is an after hours event in DCA, so assuming things stay the same this year, it won't impact on the parks' operating hours. The Grads are given park hoppers, so you'll find groups of high schoolers in both parks all day long. The last time I was there, I did notice an uptick in Grad Nite attendees as the day progressed (basically, as they arrived). Some Dis'ers have had awful experiences dealing with the high schoolers, others have said they didn't have any problems. There is really no way to know in advance if you'll come across any "badly" behaving groups. I thought that they did add to the crowds at the thrill rides and nighttime shows (especially in DL), but that they behaved pretty much like any other group visiting the parks...some were better behaved than others, but the same can be said of any group.

We're planning on going beginning of May and I checked the crowd calendars too, posted above. I think they close the parks early for grads, but not positive. We fly in on a Saturday and don't plan on going to the parks until Sunday for that reason. Unless they end up staying up late, which I doubt they will that time of year.

We've been to DL 3 times recently- once in Oct., once in early Dec. and once in early/mid May (just before the 60th). I was hoping May would be great for crowds but we had the opposite experience. We found it to be very crowded, we didn't enjoy being there for the grad nights (3 of our 5 nights) and decided we will not go in May again. Obviously we still had a good time, but we like the other times we have been better.

Awesome summary, resources, and analysis - thank you!

Thank you so much for the information and all of the calendars! You have been very helpful!

The crowds may have been because of the 60th. We were there in the days leading up to it and it was way more crowded than in any May we've been there before.

I thought Grad Nights were later in the month, but I see that there is one while we are there (10th). Guess we will make it an early night that day, or try to get to the Griffith Observatory to see it at night.

That's gonna be quite a drive on a weekday. I suggest getting on the road by 1PM to avoid the rush "hour" that starts building up at 3 and settles down at 8. Settling down meaning congested traffic rather than stand-still. Good news is that by 10 at night when you leave, it will be back down to merely congested.

Been there, done that so we know what to expect ;)
