I was thinking of ordering my DS12 a Mickey backless vest and bowtie for formal night on the cruise. Is this dressy enough or should he wear a jacket? Thanks!

DS10 will be wearing a dress shirt (button down, collar) w/pants and sneakers. And that is dressier than he usually gets.

Sneakers on formal night??? Really? Is that what the majority of the boys his age wear? I don't want him to feel out of place being too dressed up.

He goes to parochial school so he is used to wearing shirt, dress pants, shoes and a tie so that is not a problem...and luckily both of kids readily accept a bribe!!!!;) ;)

well....ummmm.....
all i can say is, my son wouldn't have worn a vest and bowtie when he was 12 even if i'd put a gun to his head (and he still wouldn't at the age of 15)...

i would think you should ask your son if he's willing to wear something like that or not....
if you go and spend money on it and then he refuses to wear it, you're inviting a big fight in the middle of your vacation....
and for something as unimportant as what a 12 year old boy wears to dinner when the adults have decided to play dress-up....

the button down collar shirt and pants with sneakers sounds plenty dressed up to me....

his school outfit sounds perfect...
at the age of 12, he sounds a bit old for a mickey mouse get up...

Lumiere999, you're plan sounds great. My nephew, 11 next cruise, wears a tux and enjoys it, but the bow tie and vest should be in keeping with the theme. Don't be discouraged from dressing for the evening. It's part of the fun, not an obligation.

I think it really depends on his personality. My brother is 15 and very into appearances and likes nice clothes and/or knowing he looks nice. He will be a groomsman in my wedding in a few weeks and his only request was to get an ARMANI tux. LOL, he has to settle for what the rental shop offered!

Bought him a pair of dress shoes for his 1st communion 2 yrs ago. He wore them once. I honestly DONT see the problem with a pair of black sneakers.

imgoingtodisney...I think black sneakers is great. I hope you don't think I was saying "really?" like "you've got to be kidding me! That is ridiculous!" it was meant like "Oh, WOW I didn't realize that". This is my first Disney cruise so I have no idea how boys dress.

I am glad to have so many options and to know that if he chooses to go with the oxford shirt and sneakers he will not be out of place and if he goes with the tie/vest (which I have already spoken to him about and he is willing to do it) then he will have that option too.

sounds good......then he can decide once he's on the cruise which of the two he'd prefer wearing (you'll both have a better idea of what's expected once you're on the cruise)...

Im sorry - I read the post too quick and dashed out the door to work. (I shouldnt have used the dont in caps)
This too is our 1st Disney cruise - I went on NCL (1st cruise) Dec 2001.
Im having trouble getting DH to dress up.

many men just wear suits (not tuxes)...
would your husband be willing to wear that?

my problem would be packing the suit for just one night of use (we travel for 6 weeks at a time...dragging the suit around is more of a bother than it sounds)....
but we're weird anyway....
oh...but then again, we could probably rent...

We were on the four day Wonder in June and we saw ALL sorts of
dress in the dining rooms. My children also attend parochial school, so my DS is quite used to wearing Docker style pants and a nice shirt. However for the cruise (he is 17!) he asked if I would buy him a suit! He wore his suit in Lumieres and the two DS's (ages 10 and 14) wore nice sun dresses and sandals. The children WANTED to get dressed up, as this was our first cruise, and it was very exciting for them to be part of the ambience. If your son wishes to wear the tie and vest, that is great. If he would rather not, a shirt and tie, or even just a nice shirt will be appropriate. However, the Mickey tie and vest will certainly fit right in! Have fun!

Hey, now, my DH will be wearing a MM vest/tie combo on the cruise!;) You can never be too old for Mickey, but I understand that at some ages it's not considered "cool".

I jsut never gave my son the option. There are times that dictates one dress in a suit and dress shoes, and for those times that is how he dressed, there was no discussion, and he just knew that was what he had to do. After all, YOU are the parent.

He will be in a tux on formal night, a dark suit on semi-formal night, and resort casual on the other nights. (We've got Lumiere's on formal night and are skipping the second Lumiere's rotation for Palo's)

imgoingtodisney, my DS (10) will also be wearing button down shirt, khakis and tennis shoes (probably tan colored skateboard type). His friend is tagging along and will be in the same....... Can't see spending $ on shoes he'll only wear for a couple of hours!

I think it is great to see such a variety for formal and people are thinking 'comfort'. I agree...you are never too old for 'MM' and all our men ages 7-65 will be sporting 'MM' ties w/their suits.

My 15 year old (will be nearly but not quite 16 when we sail) keeps flip-flopping back and forth between two extremes. They are:

1. The tux would be cool, I'd look like James Bond and
2. Why can't I just wear khakis and a shirt?

I think much will depend on how much he wants to try and impress the girls when it is time to make the rental decision!

DH, on the other hand, has a tux and his only request is that I find him a MM cummberbund (he won't wear a vest) and bow tie!
