Michigan questions

My husband and I are thinking about moving there, but sometime i get kind of scared. We live in Rapid City, SD a town of 60,000 people and the surronding communties are tiny (5,000 or less) mostly ranches.

My husband grew up in Michigan until he was 28 (that was over 14 years ago) We visit family there his daughter is there, so is his father, sister, niece and nephew, and cousins.


Well I have the news paper form Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti on my favorties and that area scares me. so why move there a few reasons:

My husband want to start a business and there is no way it can survive here because there was already 3 of those business and one failed, the population isnt there to support it.

So We are thinking about michigan to be closer to his family?

I told my husband if we move there I want to be in Romeo (or near there)

I want a safe/ Clean/friendly area?? With great schools.

Any comments...

I have never lived in those areas but have lived in large cities like Kalamazoo and Lansing. And just like everywhere else, there are good areas and bad areas. Research the area you want to move to. Look into the schools and the area for houses etc. If that is what you want to do I say go for it. The funny thing is, I was born and raised in Michigan and would of loved to have moved to South Dakota (I love anything from Wall, SD to Yellowstone).

I was born and raised here, lived shortly in NJ and Texas, but I live back in MI now. There are some beautiful places here, but overall I hope to move to FL someday! I hate winter and we get it!

Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti is not a bad area at all....all depends on what type of community you are looking for and what kind of clientele your husbands business is looking for. I grew up in the area I live in now (suburbs south of Detroit).

Michigan is nice in the summer and we are able to drive to Orlando (17-18hrs) so that is good....but winter stinks.....the windchill is terrible!

Doesn't Romeo have like ONLY ONE TRAFFIC LIGHT? I've heard it's a SMALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL town - personally I couldn't live in that small of a town, there are certain things I've gotten used to, such as, ya know, medical care, hospitals, etc

I'd research it thoroughly, talk it over and decide together. Just don't buy yet, so if it doesn't work out you can move back.

want to open up a sports card store. and michigan has a lot of teams, and sports college and pro so that is a plus.

I when i grow up want to be a nurse. but I want to work in a nice hometown hospital nothing huge.

I grew up in a town with one stop light and it was bad... but at least in romeo you dont have to drove 80 miles to the mall, and stuff
I want a town with a small town feel for my kids.

Well, I must say that you have very good taste. The Village of Romeo has gotten to be a very expensive area. It does have more than ONE traffic light & it has built up a lot in the past couple years. Naturally housing prices have also sky rocketed. Of course, Romeo could be very inexpensive in comparison to Ann Arbor!

Haven't heard too many great things about Romeo Schools but the people that I know that live in Romeo, send their children to private schools in the Utica Community School District (which encompasses the areas of Sterling Heights, Shelby Township, Utica, some areas of Macomb Township also.)

May I ask what type of business your Dh is trying to start in Michigan? If that is too personal, don't worry about answering.

Lots of luck to you. Moving is stressful especially when moving out of State. We moved to MI from Southern California to give our kids a better life. Housing is far less expensive here than in So. California & we can make ends meet with only one salary. My kids love the snow too so it's not so bad living here. Just not as pretty as So. California.

i went to www.realtor.com and prices in Romeo are too high but still looking Macomb area. i found some cute house is roseville but to close to detroit metro. then I found some more in chesterfield and clinton twp.

thank any more ideas and suggestion would be great

Chelsea michigan.......nice town, wastenaw county, west of ann arbor, close to everything including I-94.

I have family in MI, Sterling Hts & a few other areas. I hate to say this but I found a # of folks registered under the 'Megans Law' near my aunt. I was shocked to say the least. I haven't checked recently but I would take a peak at it if I were you.

Our van broke down in Fox Hills area. That seemed to be near the "new" hwy area with new shops. The outer belt 680, I think?

Just a short distance north of Romeo is a beautiful small town, Almont. They have an excellent school system and since it's over the county line into Lapeer County, home prices and taxes are a lot lower than in Macomb. If you're thinking of working at a hospital some day, it's also an easy drive to hop on I69 and head into Lapeer.

Almont isn't so small that everybody knows when you sneeze, and yet it's also not a big city. Very safe, very charming and a pretty central location to get to either Lakeside Mall (approx 30 minutes south) or Genesee Valley Mall (approx 45 minutes West).

Lots of professionals live in Lapeer County and drive into the southern counties (Macomb, Oakland, etc.) just because of the lower taxes. Once you cross that county line going south, things just sky-rocket.

i don't have any specific advice, but i just want to say that i love michigan. i was actually there last week visiting relatives. i'd love to move there.
