Hi all

I may look like a fool asking this question, but why has the name changed? I am quite a regular visitor to WDW for a UK resident, and this has just thrown me. Why has the name changed? Is the name the only difference? Thanks in advance...

While there are other parts to it, the main reason was that back in the 80's when Disney and MGM signed the deal, Disney only got a 16 or 17 year right to use the name. Back then when the deal was negotiated, the Disney name alone, sadly, wasn't a huge draw in movie circles - so they felt the need to bring in another name to bolster the studio concept. The contract expired back in 2006, but somehow they didn't actually change the name until 2007. There are other aspects to it, but in a nutshell, it was the end of a business deal. However that particular deal does not dictate the use of MGM characters as in the Great Movie Ride (Oz, etc) which are under a separate deal.
