For those who have responded to my other thread regarding Mexico - THANK you for all of your insight.

Hubby and I have found a great DEAL in Peurto Vallarta - just when we thought we were really set on Cancun, then this came up.

so, now does anyone have any advice on Peurto Vallarta and families. It would be DH, me, and DS-11 and DD-8.

Anyone been and would you take children this age...

Yup, you can take the kids to Puerto Vallarta, we love it there, the beaches are pretty and not to many people like in Cancun. Another nice place and is near Puerto Vallarta in Nayarit, guayabitos is a beautiful beach.

I have been to Mexico two times in the last three weeks (business).

One suggestion; stay away from Mexico City.

I loved Mexico City, there is so much to do and see. As with any large city though you need to be careful. My husband has to go there all the time for business. In fact he was just there for 26 days in Feb. He has never had any problems, but then again he is very careful.

A business colleague of mine was just there and 5 minutes after he left the airport he had a gun put to his head and lost his wallet and Rolex.

Not the best place for a vacation.

Puerto Vallarta is wonderful. I had the best time there. It was beautiful. Lots of great things to do. Had a great time shopping there. I didn't do the parasailing, but those in my group who did said it was a lot of fun. We did do a bus tours and those were good as well. It is definately family friendly IMO.

We are going to Mayan Riviera (just south of Cancun) in June. We are taking are kids - ages 5 and 9. We are staying at an all-inclusive resort and don't plan on taking the kids into town. There's plenty to do at the resort. It's an Iberostar.

Puerto Vallarta is a beautiful city and much more "Mexican" than Cancun. That said, I like both areas. The beaches are better at Cancun, but PV has decent beaches, some good places to snorkel, a nice market area, lovely old buildings and churches. There are plenty of bus and boat tours that run out of PV so there is plenty to see and do. Food is much cheaper than in Cancun. I'm sure you would have a good time there.

I also like the Mayan Riviera/cancun area much better then Puerta Vallarta. The beaches are much nicer and the variety of all inclusives is more. I agree. I also say look into Iberostar.

Taylor, sorry about your business associate. My husband has been going down to Mexico and South America frequently for I guess it's 12 years now. He always advises clients not to wear expensive watches, jewelry or flash a lot of cash. He advises them to be careful when taking cabs too. Also, never ever eat from street vendors. There are certain areas to avoid as well. If people follow his advice they usually don't have problems. I'm not saying he has never had any problem though. He had his laptop stolen from a room in a venue he was working at. The worst part of that was there was a security guard stationed at the doorway. He couldn't or wouldn't say who went in and out of the room. A few heads rolled over that one. He has had his brief case stolen from a venue room in the USA. So I guess it is just one of the hazards of his job lol.

Another time he was hit by a pick pocket in Argentina, but admitted it was his own fault for flashing too much money. He went to buy a candy bar on the street corner where the hotel was and pulled out a big wad of money. The guy got a nice pay day on that pick (a couple of thousand dollars). His mistake was keeping the money together where he would have to take it all out at once in full view. He knew better, so could only blame himself.

Any time you travel for business or pleasure you need to do your research. People get robbed all the time in NYC. My brother has lived there for most of his life and has been robbed. My SIL was raped in their building. Bad things happen all over the world. People need to do their research and follow safety tips and rules. I had a wonderful time in Mexico City. Maybe one day you will too.

Sorry if I was unclear in my previous posts. I am a frequent traveler. In the past three weeks I have been to Mexico twice and Germany once. I travel to Germany 4 - 5 times per year. I feel so much safer in Germany than I do in Mexico. On my Mexico trips I always change to a cheaper watch and take all of my crefit cards from my wallet. I also carry at least $200 extra just for the potential of being robbed. If they get some cash, they leave you alone. During my trips I have never really felt in danger and did have fun (Don Julio Tequila helps :) ), I just wanted to point out that this is not the safest place to be.

Ahhhh Don Julio, he is the only other man I could truely love besides my husband.
No it isn't the safest, but it is doable. I can't wait to go back. I just wanted to point out there is no place that is truely safe when traveling. When my husband started going down there his company wanted to get him an apartment or rental house (It would have been a really nice area), but he told them no. The gringo, who at the time spoke no spanish, wanted to stay in a full service hotel and is still doing so to this day. Needless to say I felt like royalty every time I walked into the lobby :teeth: !
By the way what hotel do you like to stay in when you go?

I get to see the world 3 days at a time (last week I left for Germany on Thursday, returned on Sunday).

This weeks trip to Mexico I stayed at the Crown Plaza in Toluca and the Hilton at the airport. The fun just never stops.

Who ever said business travel was fun?

Now that I live in Texas and read all of the stuff going on...geesh...scary stuff. Lots of abductions & murders from the drug lords.

The general rule of thumb is to fly in to your area to vacation and not drive. Driving across the border is where the abductions, killings occur.

The Gringo always stays at the Presidente (sp?) when in Mexico City. He really liked the Marriott next door, but gets a better rate at Presidente. I had to laugh at your comando travel style. That is how my husband travels a lot. He was lucky to spend the 26 days in MC. Even though he puts in long days (18-20 hours most days) he was able to unpack his suitcase. This SA trip is a in and out in one, two or three days type of run in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Puru. On his down days, which isn't too often, he rarely goes sight seeing, he'd rather stay at the hotel and read a book. Most of the time he loves his job though and I can't see him doing anything else. I guess that kind of traveling gets in your blood.

ok, so stay away from Mexico City.
So how bout Cancun at the Royal Caribbean in Cancun? I heard the "Royals" are all right. Cancun for kids ??? I know the nightlife is great but were talking 12 nights with an 11 and 8 year old...

Ok I liked PV alright but I wouldnt go back just for one reason and this reason only . I love clear blue water , I dive when I go to Mexico and Cozumel seems to be the place for me because of the water. It is just average kinda brown looking water and I can get that right here in Texas : )

For someone who does not Dive it is great because you just dont look at the water the same .
