My dad wants to take his metal detector down to Orlando when we fly out of Kansas City on Southwest. Has anyone had any experience with traveling with a metal detector? If so, what would be the best way to transport it, as a carry-on item (not in the original box) or in checked luggage? My only concern about having it checked is that luggage cannot be locked and I would hate to have it stolen while in transit. Yes, I know that that is rare but things do get stolen out of luggage.

Thanks,
Kris.

Unless it folds up or telescopes up and can be made small enough to fit standard carry-on sizes, he won't be able to carry it on.

I believe they will make him check it. SW flights are pretty full so overhead space is at a premium.
