Metal detector for kids?

Does anybody know anything about a metal detector for kids? My 8 year only nephew wants one for Christmas. I saw that Target has one from National Geographic and Toys R Us has one from Edu Science. Both are really cheap Anybody have either of these? are they junk or do they work? (He just wants to goof around with it in the woods behind their house).

I had one when I was around 12 (which was about 15 years ago). I don't remember what brand it was or anything...I just remember that it didn't work real well.

My dd10 got a metal detector for x mas last year. It is one for kids and I am sure that it was inexpensive. I wish that there was a brand on the detector but there isn't and I no longer have the box.

It does work but the metal can't be "buried". It has to be on the surface or barely below the surface to be "detected".

It was fun and worth the small price for her. We would bring it along on our beach vacations and it kept her happily occupied between sand castle building.

DS is getting the one from National Geo. for Christmas. He has wanted one for a long time I dont know how well it will work but I hope so.
