Met DD's 1st grade teacher today -UPDATE ON DD'S ASSIGNMENT

We had open house today at DD's school to meet the teacher and see the classroom. School starts tomorrow. The teacher seems very nice but continued to mispronounce DD's name, even after we said it ourselves several times. I'm not holding it against her, open house was kind of a mad house and I'm sure she has a million things on her mind.

However, afterwards, I told DD that her first assignment tomorrow is to politely let the teacher know how she likes her name pronounced. We met a friend on our way out who's son had this teacher last year and she mispronounced his name ALL year! This boy is quite shy, however, so he just accepted it.

This is a pet peeve of mine. I hope your daughter has success. She may have to remind the teacher repeatedly. The other option is to not answer to the mispronunciation. As an adult, I can get away with this. The wide-eyed "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know you were speaking to me."

Oh, for me it's my LAST name, so this does not come up too often!

But there's NO WAY your DD should have to go the entire school year with her name being mis-pronounced!

My oldest DD gets her name mispronounced all the time! We spelled it Jeana, but it's pronounced Gina, not Jenna, not Je-anna.... Sometimes I think I should of left her name as Heather!

FYI, AQ, I read your DD's name as "Gina"!!!

Wow, a name mispronounced all year? That must of been horrible. I hope the teacher learns to pay attention and learn your DD's name right My last name gets mispronounced so many ways, it's not even funny. Wish her luck in school I go back soon too, August 27th.

I have the same pet peeve not only the mispronouncing of my first name and last name, but the spelling of both. Some people think that Theresa has no "h" in it. Then they want to pronounce the "h" as if they were pronouncing the word there. I had one person send me something and when I told him Theresa with an "h" he put the "h" at the end of the name.

Thanks for the support! I plan to ask DD this afternoon if she was able to straighten her teacher's pronunciation. If she wasn't, I'll call and leave a message for the teacher.

I'm more upset this morning by the fact that DD shook off my hand before we had even reached the door of the school, said good-bye, and took off without a backward glance. I stood there and watched until she was lost in a sea of kids.

Good luck! What is your DD's name? I have a DS named Aaron and many people spell it with one A. Oh well....

It went well! DD was able to correct the teacher the first time she said her name and all appears well.

DD's name is Michaela, prounounced Mi-kay-la. The teacher was pronouncing it with a soft "ch" like Mi-shay-la. We've also heard it said as Mike-ah-lah, and also as Michael.

My DD8 has the same trouble. While I admit to spelling her name differently (what possessed me to do that, i have no idea), Magan (pronouced with a long A in the beginning), the teacher called her Megan all year. I hope to straighten it out this year. However, she did tell me that when she turns 18, she is changing it to the proper spelling Maegan. Wiseguy she is at only age 8.

I ditto the sentiments.....make that teacher get it right!! You're allowed to name her whatever you want to and spell it however you want to. My mom has had this problem all of her life...and granted my grandmother gave her the strangest name but it came from a gospel radio station...one of the ladies had the name. So it's Charlonia pronounced "Shar-loan-a" Whenever telemarketers called they would get it wrong and my dad would correct them and then hang up.

Now I have the same problem with my married (polish)last name. Maiden name was so easy(very common word).

As much as this hurts, I assure you it's a VERY good thing. I know of at least 2 parents that could tell you such sad, sad tales of kids who ALWAYS hated separation. One of these "kids" I know is now 21 and STILL has issues.

Sounds like she's off to a wonderful start and I'm glad the teacher got it right!!!

Thank you, Dorothy. I'm both proud of her for jumping into the new school year and first grade without hesitation, and crushed that I didn't even get a good-bye hug. I think I'll start getting my hug at home before we get in the car so I can just "let her go" once we are at school.

Here's hoping the teacher remembers. Names are so important.

I had two students named Breanna last year. The student in the morning was Bre-anna. The afternoon student was Bre-ah-na. Both were furious if I called them the wrong name because they didn't like each other. I got the other ~148 names right most of the time.

My first name is almost always mispronounced which is why I just go by Lisa. Every pornounces it Lisa Beth but it is really pronounced Lisbet. They spell it wrong half the time. It is spelled Lisabeth but even if I spell it to them they add an E and make it Elisabeth or even worse Elizabeth.

My daughter has the same name as yours. One of the reasons that we decided to spell her name MIKAELA instead of the traditional MICHAELA was because we thought that people would insist on pronouncing her name "Mi-shay-la"

The funny thing is that most of the little girls that we have run into with the same name as hers spell it MIKAYLA.

I'm glad it seems to be working out for your daughter! For us, the problem is with spelling the last name. DD isn't annoyed so much when they misprounce the last name (begins SCH, but pronounced SH not SK) but absolutely HATES it when they put it on certificates or in concert programs spelled wrong. She's such a girl! (Takes everything personally! ) And THEN we have the problem of people reversing her 1st & last names. I don't know whatever possessed us to name her that! Both names could be used as 1st or last. Talk about DUMB!

I can totally empathize! I spent 7th grade being called Jessiker (see below) by my English teacher ! The only compensation was that all of us who had names ending in "a" had our names pronounced with an "er".

DDs are named Ashlynn (called Ashley all the time) and Maiya (gets Mee-ya rather than Mi-ya a lot, although I don't get it). I guess it comes full circle.

My solution: during open house (we have a meet the teachers before school starts), I emphasize the pronunciation, and will not leave teachers alone until they get it right! Annoying, I know, but I had a reason for naming my children adn I would appreaciate it if the teacher gets it right!
