Memory Maker Advanced Purchase - How early?

I'm thinking we're going to go ahead and get MM for our May/June 2018 trip. I understand there's a deal to save $30 if bought at least 3 days prior to when you want to use it. How early is too early to buy it? I read that once "activated" is good for 30 days, then you get 45 days since date of photo to do with them whatever you need to do with them. When is it "activated"? I didn't want to drop $169 if its gojng to auto activate in 3 days, then the 30 clock starts 8 months before my trip... or can I choose when to activate it? How does that work?

It will not self activate. When you go to download a photo, one of the available options will be to activate MM.
