Memory foam mattress toppers-how are they?

I'm thinking of getting a memory foam mattress topper. The main complaints I've heard are that they're hot, smelly, and hard to move around on (the thicker ones). But I've also heard that if you stick with a good brand (I'm looking at buying through Amazon) you'll hopefully avoid the smell and heat. And the thicker ones are more likely to cause inabilitgy to move. What's a good brand? What's a good thickness? Actually I'm thinking of buying a firm mattress, then a separate mattress topper rather than a mattress with a plush or pillowtop.

They do hold your body heat, which may be a good thing in cold weather, but not so much in warm weather. Our experience with memory foam mattresses was not good. They lose their memory in about a year. They do replace them a few times, but then ask you to sign off for no more replacements. We've had much better luck with the sleep number mattress without a foam topper. You can adjust the mattress to your liking as often as you want.

I don't get hot on our topper or our mattress.
We had the topper for about 3 years before we bought a mattress. Now the topper is on the guest bed.
Loved it and love the mattress. I sleep so well on it and it helps by back not to hurt.
We have had the mattress about 4-5 years.
Costco...whatever brand they sell. I think one of them is Novafoam.

I agree with the PP. We love ours and purchased it at Costco also. We haven't had issues with it being too warm or having funky smells. We've had it for several years now and no complaints. We bought it because our then new bed was way too firm and so uncomfortable. Now it is so cozy.

We bit the bullet and finally got a memory foam topper last month.
We bought a 3 inch Pedic Solutions foam topper from QVC, when
they ran the Father's Day 'everything for 5 payments'.
It came with a quilted cover, and the quilted part is removeable
if we want to lay directly on the foam (with cover still in place).

WE LOVE IT!!!!!!! :cloud9:

I have a serious injury, and this is like heaven to me after
going without the foam year after year because we weren't sure.

Yes, we feel warmer with it, but it's not uncomfortable.

We bought some and they were just OK, then I checked out the prices of the memory foam ,matresses on OVerstock and got all 3 kids those. They thank me all the time. i would go for the matress before a topper IMHO.

We just purchased 2 from Costco about a month ago. So far they are great, my DS loves it on his bed.

They also came with the covers for them.

We bought the 3" Novaform from Costco earlier this year after I had spinal surgery. DH USED to sweat like he had just run a marathon every night. Now with the foam pad, he is dry as a bone, so I do not get the notion that they are hot. No smell from ours either.

It's been very beneficial for my back. I had to sleep for one night at my sister's place on her stepsons crappy regular mattress and I thought I was crippled in the morning!

I have had mine for about 9 months. It was a bit smelly when it arrived but that went away in about a day. At first I loved it, but it does hold the heat. I have the 4 inch Serta one which I purchased on Overstock.
