Never really paid attention to this until now. I have a Nikon D7000. Just reformatted two cards and have the camera set up for Raw 14Bit lossless in slot 1 and jpeg in slot 2.

If I only place a card in slot one it tells me my pic count is 318 (with 16GB) card. The manual states an 8GB card should get 223 so I would figure this should be in the mid 400's. I know it is not an exact science but 33% less seems a bit much.

When I place a card in slot 2 which should just be for jpg the count goes up to 448 which is what I would have thought I would get in raw captures on card 1.

confused though why the count increases when I place a card in slot 2 when that should just be for jpg copies. It should have nothing to do with how many captures should fit on card 1. I would understand if I set it up as overflow and it counted both cards but that is not how it is set up.

What # should I believe? The 318 or the 448 and why the difference?

TIA

I think Nikon is known for overly conservative picture remaining counts.
It's not unusual to be able to take more pictures than the original estimate. (Things like blue sky's or fuzzy backgrounds take up less digital space).
Shooting styles are different, so you will have to determine how many pictures your style results in.

I am not certain, but since you have it set to have RAW in first slot and jpeg in 2nd, but no card, it may be trying to save the jpeg to the first card as well.
