It depends in which mode you are shooting, JPEG, RAW or JPEG and RAW (Which on my camera is RAW +). Which do you shoot?

According to this link:

http://www.tapeandmedia.com/sdhc-memory-card-capacity-table.asp

You'd get about 3000 pictures at 10 mega pixels. So you'd reduce the capacity for the larger pictures by about a third. You should get about 2000-2300 pictures.

i don't know, i just got a nikon coolpix 4100 to take on my next trip and haven't done anything more then put the card in and take 2-3 pics just to make sure it works.

thanks

I looked at the chart provided by the PP and the resolution is much higher on your camera than is used in that chart. Your camera records in JPEG for still pictures. An educated guess is that you will probably get about 650-700 images on an 8gb card. The memory card will not the major limiting factor though. Nikon rates your battery at 190 shots. If you are going to use the camera for long periods of time (AKA more shots), you may want to invest in another battery. Your camera uses a proprietary battery and does not have the option of AAA or AA type batteries. Just food for thought.

Your camera is most likely shooting in JPG mode. At 14MP, the GENERAL average would be around 1800 shots, assuming a 4MB file size per photo. However, when you take photos your file size can vary greatly, depending on what's in the photo. Color pixels take up more space -black pixels don't. So much depends on what's in your photo - take a photo in the dead of night, where you can barely make out one small streetlight, and most of the rest of the photo is black...then compare that file size to a daylight photo of a colorful quilt laid out on the lawn. The daylight photo of the color quilt will have a significantly larger file size, because pretty much every pixel in the photo is displaying a color. The more black pixels, the lower the photo's size. So while you might fit 1,400 bright daylight photos of very colorful detailed scenes, you might fit 3,000 nighttime photos with very low detail and lots of black. That's why those capacity ratings are just guidelines to give you a general idea.

Other factors such as what JPG compression mode the camera is set to will also affect the overall file size.

Hope that helps!
