Memo to McCain: It's Not Working

Look, I’m not saying Senator McCain is wrong. Maybe Senator Obama is a socialist. Maybe Senator Obama supports domestic terrorists. Maybe Senator Obama in league with his ex-minister to bring down America.

It all seems incredibly unlikely, but lets pretend for the moment that all these accusations are true.

Here’s the problem: Making wild accusations that Americans have trouble believing is not working. In fact it is having the opposite effect. McCain is dropping in the polls like lead through water.

I could see muddying the political waters with this kind of nastiness if it worked. But it isn’t working. The political waters are being muddied and it is becoming increasingly less likely McCain will be president.

I’m sure Gov. Palin can be re-programmed to say nice things about her opponents and Senator McCain is pretty effective when he is talking about himself and not his Democratic challenger.

How about it Senator?

Im pretty sure he's not going to answer you on the DIS:confused3 ;)

This is the real tragedy of this election. McCain has so much more to offer than this mudslinging. He has hooked up with a campaign team that seems unable to understand what they have. Come on, the man has spent his entire political career making choices no one else would have. This is a campaign I could have run.

But instead of celebrating a truly unique politician, we are subject to rounds of petty name calling. This election should be close -we should be passionately arguing the merits of the bailout. Instead we are holding our breath while we wait to see just how far the McCain ticket will go with the next attack.

You might be right. But McCain chose his campaign team, it is not like he "hooked up" with them or had no choice.

I'm a Dem. but I really liked him in the race between Bush/McCain/Kerry, I was even rooting for him to win over Bush and would have crossed my party lines and voted for McCain over Kerry.

Good point. McCain absolutely has to take responsibility for the direction of his campaign. And if that campaign seems to be going in the wrong direction, then maybe that's reason by itself not to vote for the man.

What I find frustrating is this decision to stay negative. Sometimes negative works. I get that. But right now for John McCain negative isn't working. You don't need secret polls to figure that out.

Luckily McCain has some huge strengths which can be used to forge a different strategy. I'm not saying it will work, but I do know the negative thing isn't working.

Calling Obama a socialist isn't a wild accusation. He is one. Nobody needs McCain to tell them that.

And lot of his supporters are now asking what exactly people think is wrong with socialism and explaining how it is really a good idea. They're coming out of the closet, as they should. At least they have the courage of their convictions, even if they are idiots.

I'm not a big McCain fan and I don't think he's much better than Obama, but I do think people who support a socialist ought to at the very least admit that he is one.

I think McCain is a socialist, will you admit it?

I think Palin is a theocratic fascist. I think people who support a theocratic fascist should at the very least admit that she is one. Will you admit it?

Hmmm.... Actually, I think saying that people should "admit" your own biased distortion of reality is pointless.

OK, you're right. Obama is a socialist. He has voted for the intervention of the government in the private sector and he well do so even more as President. So we are all agreed.

But calling or intimating that Obama is a socialist is making McCain drop in the polls. Even if the accusation is true, Americans don't want the McCain ticket making the accusation. Time to try a different tack.

Sure, that would have been swell. He probably should have selected Joe Lieberman, like he originally wanted to, to be his running mate. Problem is, his party's base doesn't much like that McCain. The only reason we're not talking about Obama creaming Gov. Romney in the polls by double digits is simple. McCain would have never made it out of the primaries if he didn't take an extreme hard right. The fact that he selected a neo-con running mate only pushed him further to the fringe.

Kind-of off-topic, but....
Bush is a socialist. He has approved the intervention of the government in the private sector and he well do so even more as President. So we are all agreed.
Fixed your post, incidentally. :rotfl:
