The new member id cards have an expiration date and that date is not tied to the expiration of your contract. When your member id card is about to expire, you should receive a new card (if you haven't sold).

Your Saratoga Springs membership contract expires on January 31, 2054.

Back in the 1990's they had membership cards with an expiration date, and they then issued new ones when the date approached. They are apparently renewing that concept again. What is on the membership card has nothing to do with when your ownership interest ends, which for SSR is 2054. They have not explained why they are now reinstating membership cards that expire and then are replaced with new ones, but some have reasoned that it is likely because they now have a lot of ex-owners who still have, and could wrongly use for discounts, membership cards with no expiration date.

That's what I suspect is behind it.

My guess is you are right - at some point they said "hey we could save some money by having membership cards that don't expire and not having to re-issue them" and then recently they realized "hey it would cost less to re-issue membership cards with end dates than eat all of those discounts used by people who are not entitled to them."

I'd think a membership card with an RFID chip would work better, and then they could verify the discount at the point-of-sale. But maybe they don't want to tie us to that technology for 50 years.

Or possibly the POS can't be upgraded to validate eligibility of discount.

Thanks I did call MS on the card and they said it is the card not membership that expires.
