If I had a large family, I'd definitely be a mega-pointer. My purpose when I bought into DVC was to review the point charts and determine how much it would cost in the peak point seasons to stay in a 2-bedroom Boardwalk villa for 2 weeks. That's how much I bought. At the time, my family was 3, and occasionally my brother and his wife would come too - we knew by making some trips only 1 bedroom, maybe 1 solo studio stay for me, some stays being during the lower point schedules, that we could cover a good 20-25 nights per year. As my parents got older, they stopped coming as much, as my brother's family grew by 3 kids he started his own DVC, so my 440 points ended up being more than enough for my 4-5 trips a year, usually in a 1-bedroom, with banked points to roll each year.
So if I wanted to do the same thing, but instead had a family of 5-6 always coming with me, I'd need to consider 2-bedroom to 3-bedroom stays every time, and consider the highest-point seasons 'just in case', meaning I'd need to have a lot more points on hand.
