Mega bloks vs Legos

Does anyone know if the mini Mega Bloks at Walmart are compatible with Legos? I can get 2 of the MB sets plus 2 small Lego sets for the same price as one large Lego set and with 2 kids close in age, 2 of each is much much better around here. We already have a bunch of Legos though so I want them to be able to put them all together eventually.

I am not sure if they are compatible because the one time we bought mega blocks, DS was so frustrated with them that we tossed them and have not bought any since. They don't stay together well at all. Its sad because they have some really cool themes and are a bit cheaper in price than legos.

No, they are not compatible. The holes are smaller for Lego's. DS always had a ton of Lego's and a few sets of Mega Blocks and they never fit together.

They are compatible in our household, that's weird. The MBs are made of entirely different material and don't feel as nice, so they aren't really played with much (and they are official my husband's, LOL), but they do go together if needed.

Interesting. I'm sitting here right now looking at them. I put them together and while they stack, they do not stay(basically the pegs are too small on the legos for the hole in the MB. Maybe the newer ones are more compatible. These are probably 3-4 years old.

We are pretty much out of the lego stage at this point. DS likes the kits and will build, but not a whole lot of desire to build from his imagination anymore. Kind of miss those days of sitting down for a few hours with him and just building.

To OP, I guess they do fit. Sorry if I mislead.

I think they claim to be compatible, but because Mega Blocks aren't as well made they don't always work as well.

I read an article recently about what a manufacturing marvel Legos are. They demand a precision tolerance of only 0.002 millimeters. That level of precision is almost unheard of in most other industries.

This exactly. Legos are more expensive but worth it for us.

The best I can say is buy one small set of Mega Blocks and try them.
You will most likely be happy to pay what Lego asks.
I would love Legos to be cheaper or something to be of close quality but here you do get what you pay for big time.

I would say that mega blocks stick to Legos about as well as they stick to other mega blocks - which is not that well. Also, the directions in set of mega locks are vastly inferior.

Around here we say mega blocks are mega lame.

So I found some megabloks and did a test. (We bought a few POTC sets on clearance a while back. The kids put them in the playhouse outside because they don't work well.) I put together a 4x4 block with the same size Lego block. The MB fit into the Lego, and vice versa but now they are permanently stuck together. I can't web pry them apart with tools so there is no way they would work for kids (at least not without causing a lot of frustration). They are the same size but the MB are a different type of plastic and have scratches an chips in them.

I do think Legos are expensive, but they really are unlike any other toy. That's really all my kids play with anymore. And most of their basic blocks were DH's. They also have a bin at my parents' house to play with that were my brother's. They still look like new. You really can't say that about any other toy that has been regularly played with for over 20 years.

My DS 7 got a meag blocks set for Christmas. The thing wouldn't even go together, it kept falling apart. He was very upset. We have TONS of Legos never had a problem (except some of the Star Wars stuff falls apart if you actually play with it).

We have 6 children, 6-25. Let me just say that when our oldest kids were small and we started buying lego sets, which even back then were very expensive IMO, I knew we would keep many sets, mainly the duplo for grandkids one day. I am happy to report that we still have all the lego duplo sets. No grandkids yet, but our 6 yo is still playing with them. They are in excellent condition. I do wash them periodically, as I wash all the toys

As far as the mega blocks. Well, my DIL would buy those, and they never it made past a year or so. They would get all scratched up and just didn't seem as compatible.

So from my point of view, legos are the best value all the way around.

Alright, you guys have convinced me to bite the bullet and pay for Legos. Any suggestions on the best place/time to buy these? Probably looking at just a box of the girly ones or some of the smaller Lego friends sets.

Check Walmart clearance, I just saw one of the smaller Lego Friends sets in our Walmart for a few bucks off. Otherwise Toys R Us runs sometimes runs good sales, something like buy one get one 50% off.

Lego Friends are often excluded in the BOGO sales at TRU. DH has gotten good deals at yoyo.com. It's related to Amazon, and they often have deals for 20-30% off any item. We've gotten several big Friends sets that way. Shipping is super fast too.

I agree, lego lasts forever and is so much nicer to play with as it doesn't "stretch".

Our children have been given some Megabloks on various occasions and all the sets have been given away due to them never playing with them I would rather have less lego and build it up each year for Christmas and birthdays.

We are going to be graduating from Duplo to Lego this Christmas and I am very excited! I played with them when I was a child and still love them.
