Meg Crofton's vision
posted by ScottPowers on Jan 22, 2007 5:42:50 PM (Orlando Sentinel)

Central Florida civic leaders will get to hear new Walt Disney World President Meg Crofton express her vision for the resort's future Thursday morning, during Disney's annual Central Florida community breakfast.

The breakfast traditionally has been where Disney World's president and one or two other top Disney officials explain their agenda to Central Florida's political, business and social leaders, to convince them that Disney World and the community are working together.

Though she's made rounds privately among many of Central Florida's civic leaders since becoming Disney World president in August, this speech will be her first chance to appear before a gathering of them. So the speech will not just be a chance for her to share her plans. It'll be a bit of a public debut for her.

The event, this year at Disney's Contemporary Resort, is an invitation-only affair and more than 100 civic leaders are expected, along with most of Disney World's top officials. Crofton also will be rolling out highlights of Disney's "Year of a Million Dreams" celebration.

Interestingly, Al Weiss, who is her predecessor, mentor and current boss, won't be there to watch her big coming-out appearance. He'll be too busy, less than a mile away. Weiss, worldwide president of Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, is scheduled to lead an unrelated media event at the Magic Kingdom at the same time as the community breakfast.

Disney officials strongly denied any suggestion that the scheduling conflict might be intentional, or even just a happy coincidence. Things were not set up, they said, to allow Crofton to have the community spotlight all to herself, or to give Weiss a convenient excuse to not be at the breakfast where he might cast his shadow.

Disney officials said that Weiss and Crofton both wish he could be at the breakfast, but the timing of the events simply made it impossible. His appearance Thursday morning in the Magic Kingdom, they said, is dictated by TV scheduling needs. And the community breakfast couldn't be rescheduled.

The breakfast starts the second day of Disney World's big, annual, three-day international press event, where Crofton will get plenty of other opportunities to establish herself and her agenda.
