my sis saw something on the news about a CM aboard the Wonder having measles..any info anyone????

It was German Measles (Rubella) and I believe a guest developed it while on board? (not a CM). Most people are innoculated against Rubella as a child. Women who are pregnant or who are planning to, should be sure to get innoculated, as Rubella can cause development problems for the fetus.

I contracted german measles at the age of 21 after being exposed to a patient who had it in the hospital. At the time, German measels was very rare in the US, but this little girl had apparantly been to Puerto Rico recently where evidently she caught the bug. At the time I saw her she was undiagnosed. I was asymtopmatic for up to 10 days afterwards. At that time it just hit me like a ton of bricks. I thought I was dying. I immediately knew that this little girl had the measles and that I probably contracted it from her. The Center for Disease Control became invlolved as they did not want an epidemic on their hands. I was quaranteed for up to a month. It was pretty awful. I urge anyone who was on the magic for that trip to watch for tell tale signs/symptoms like malaise, nausea, fever & body aches, and contact their physician immediately should any of these manifest.

Irodk, I thought Rubella was pretty mild. From what I've been told, it isn't bad for anyone except for pregnant women/unborn babies.

Anyone who's alrady had a child in the US or who has had their first office visit for a current pregnancy should have had their rubella immunity tested by their ob. It is standard to check for it.

FYI: For those of us in our late 20's early 30's beware that even though you were innoculated you MAY NOT be immune. The vaccines weren't as good as they are now. This is why your immune status is checked on your prenatal labs. If you were exposed you should problably notify your MD, male or female. If you are not PG they may give you a booster just in case.

German measles are not fun to get - I had them twice as a child, even after being innoculated. I was out of school for awhile & just remember feeling awful for a long time. It is extremely dangerous for a pregnant woman to be exposed to German measles.
