Measles outbreak sends unvaccinated students home - What do you think??

This scares me! I have one unvaccinated child and I'm very uncomfortable with it! By the time he needed his shots 8 of the 11 cousins in our family were diagnosed on the austism spectrum! (Nothing in our family history before this generation either) I was 99.9% sure the vaccine didn't cause the autism but the 1% uncertainty kept me from vaccinating him. Well, guess what? He was diagnosed with autism anyway! He's now 11 and doing GREAT but every time I take him to get his shots I start panicking that it may make him regress. I know in my head he'll be fine but my heart is what I end up listening to! So, now I'm scared to get him vaccinated and I'm scared he'll get a communicable disease! Ahhhh!!!

My daughter is vaccinated against everything except she can't receive the MMR due to being immunosuppressed. It always scares me to hear of these outbreaks. I don't think she's at as great a risk now that she's graduated high school. I would surely have her vaccinated if she were able to be. No one would have to tell me to take her out of school if there were an outbreak. I'd be doing it anyway.

The way I deal with this is -

My kid was BORN with autism. That creates enough challenges. She doesn't need the added complications that these nasty diseases can cause. She is very visual and a voracious reader. She doesn't need her sight compromised. She loves music. Losing her hearing would be devastating. She has sensory issues. She doesn't need to be fighting rashes. She is also doing very, very well but that is because we have been working with her for years. She doesn't need the setbacks that encephalitis could cause, which is a complication of measles.

Your right. I'm calling the doctor today and vaccinating him! He's an extrememly talented piano player and becoming deaf or blind would be devastating...just that thought alone will help me go through with it! Thanks for the wake-up call! Sometimes a mom's feelings aren't grounded in medical science and they are hard to overcome! I'm doing it, though!

What is it with our kids and piano? My daughter can hear something once and sit down and pluck out the melody, then she adds to it, then she changes keys and plays it all over the keyboard.

Good luck to you and your son. I would work with your doctor to put together a schedule you are comfortable with.

Is your daughter a math whiz, too?

Good for you. Science is 100% on this one, vaccines don't cause autism. In fact, just recently the nut job who first started the whole misconception (Dr Andrew Wakefield in the medical journal The Lancet, 1998) had been thoroughly discredited and brought up on charges of professional misconduct, and further disciplinary actions may yet be taken.

There are valid reasons for choosing not vaccinate. But the fear of a link to autism is not one them. Good luck!

Only in that she has an incredible memory. Once something is written on her hard drive it is there FOREVER. She can kick her older sister's butt when it comes to math facts, but she definitely doesn't have the passion for math that she has for music. However, she is young. She just turned eight a couple of days ago.
