Should we book the meal plan?

My son cannot consume gluten. When we stayed at the value resorts last time we were limited as to what items we could order.

We'd like to rent a DVC villa this time are considering adding on the meal plan.

I understand that Disney from someone else here that they are very accomodating at Disney with some advanced notice. Can this apply to meal plan?

Any thoughts?

If you call 24 hrs ahead at the rest of your choice they will prepare what you want. When you add the meal plan shoud be the same disnet does help.

Here are several links on eating at Disney with food allergies:

I have personally had them ask me when I checked in at a restaurnant if any in our party had food allergies and have seen chefs taking parents and children around buffets to discuss what was/was not safe, saw/heard a person order a burger without bun at Cosmic Ray's and was asked by CM if it was for food preference or allergies and when it was said for allergies a manager was brought over immediately to take care of guest.

I have a nephew and a niece with severe food allergies, so I'm very familiar with what it takes to keep them safe. My Dsis can't wait for the day they can go to Disney so they can all go out to eat and keep everyone safe.

Thanks so much both of you. I appreciate the info.

We found the table service restaurants to be great about accommodating special food allergy and other challenges. We had both allergies and lactose issues, and had no problems with the dining plan.

Come to the disABILITIES Board and check out the disABILITIES FAQs thread near the top of the board. In post 3 of that thread there are some links to information about WDW with food allergies. Plus, if you look back a page or 2 on the board, there are some threads about travel with food allergies.

Thanks! I'll have a look.

We had the food plan and traveled with someone with celiac disease. We had it noted on each reservation and told them again at the podium when we checked in. At each TS restaurant the chef came to the table to answer questions and make suggestions. At one he even made a gluten free chocolate cake for dessert. Everyone was very helpful. For the counter service places it was knowing what the person could eat or not that enabled her to order and not have any problems as there really wasn't anyone to answer questions.

We have done the dining plan with DD who cannot have gluten. TS restaurants are much easier to plan for. When making ADR you can have allergy noted and contact Brenda Bennett and she can give you more info. The chef came out at every restaruant either to walk me through buffet or menu and offer suggestions Often even buffet foods would come from the kitchen to avoid cross contamination. I know at chef Micheys someone dropped a breaded chick into the grilled chicken, I explained to the person working the buffet and the brought fresh grilled chicken for DD. They are great. If I could afford TS for every meal I would. Now that we have DVC I will probably cook some meals instead of counter service which was more of a pain. The do have GF pizza available at many counter service locations.

For counter service as to speak with manager and get food ingredient book. Be prepared to wait for gf foods since they are specially prepared.

This is a timely thread for me. My dad just found out he has celiac disease, and he's concerned about our upcoming trip. I just finished all the ADR's. Sounds like I'd better call back and note it on all the ressies. Glad to hear how accommodating they are - we'll be dealing with two cases of diabetes as well as now a case of celiac - sounds like a lot of work for the poor chefs, but glad it can be done.

Hi Melinda,

Sorry to hear your Dad has Celiac. The diet/lifestyle adjustment can be challenging.

This is my favorite book to help replace bread/hamburger buns/pizza crust etc.

The Gluten-Free Gourmet Bakes Bread by Bette Hagman

Bette Hagman has other books as well. This is the most current.

If you need any resources, recipe ideas etc. fire away. I've been at this for a while and have a culinary background, so if there is anything that you're looking for I'd be happy to help.

Have a great time on your trip!

my problem with the Disney restuarants is time. most people are out of there in an hour maybe 90 minutes.

because I am allergic to pepper and other seasoning - so only plain for me. It sometimes take the chef a couple of hours to prepare it.

they have to clean everything - then he has to remember no pepper - very, very hard for chefs.

Brenda Bennett [Brenda.Bennett@disney.com] MAGIC KINGDOM Foods 407-824-5967.
WDW.MK.Special.Diets@disney.com

this was who I talked to - she definitely hadn't run across my allergy. but there are a bunch of people who go to Disney with the glutten one.

also allergic to rye and oats - but can do wheat - just as long it is only wheat.

DO NOT STAY AT SSR - there food court can't be prepare anything special.

so ended up in DTD and even then most of the restuarants season their food, some foods (most foods) comes seasoned. So let just say I ate alot in MacDonalds when I didn't do the cooking.

I'm going to look this book up on amazon now; it'll make a nice additional birthday or Christmas gift for him I think. I told my mom about this thread and she was so relieved to hear how accommodating Disney is - they've never been to WDW before, and it's all a bit overwhelming to them - I'm so thankful for the Dis and all the nice and knowledgeable people here!:grouphug:
