I've read all the discussion on what to wear on formal and semiformal night. But what about the other nights? Is it still khakis and Polos, or are shorts acceptable (opinions are fine, but I'm really looking for common practice)?

I've only been on the 4 day Wonder so I've never really had a "formal" night but our non formal attire was usually khaki's, dress shirt/polo shirt -- my husband wore a dress shirt with tie to Palo (no jacket). I think shorts are not recommended in the dining rooms and I don't remember seeing anyone in them though Im sure it's happened. I usually bring one pair of black pants and then just pieces to go with them. Hope that helps.

If you check out the second post on this page, the one with "Important info" from Webmaster Penny, it offers a link to dressing on DCL....quite a hot topic on the boards from time to time!:smooth:

I know there have been a lot of posts, but just to update...we just returned from the last 4-day cruise, and in Trition's (where disney recommends a jacket), we looked around to see what the men were wearing.

We had the main (early) seating. I would guess perhaps 10-15% of the men had on jackets; about 25-35% had on ties, and the rest (about half) work open collar shirts or polo shirts.

And, there was absolutely, positively no reaction from the staff or other diners to those who chose to wear the casual clothing. We enjoyed dressing up, other tables enjoyed wearing their comfortable clothes, and we all had a grand time. I may have been the only person who even noticed the range of dress.

I keep seeing about adults what they should be wearing to dinner but what about the kids. I have 2 ds that will be 13 and 8 on our cruise. I don't have many outfits for them because it is hard to find dress pants in their sizes( they are short and stout) Plus I don't want to spend alot of money on clothes they are going to out grow in less then a year. In 2000 we went on the 4 night cruise and they wore a polo shirt with a sweater vest and had on dress shorts. No body said anything to them about their attire. I plan on having them dress up for either the formal night/or the semi-night on our 7 night cruise. But then on the other nights I was going to have them wear 1-2 pairs of dockers and the other nights dress shorts again. Do you think I will have a problem on the Tropical night/etc. with shorts?

Common practice on board (I have sailed 9 times) is you can wear shorts (both adults and kids) on Tropical night. We actually have asked our server the night before and he encouraged us to wear our shorts and tropical shirts for dinner and deck party!!

On the 7 nighters, the Mexicalli... and Tropicalli... nights you wear your tropical clothes (or "mexican" if there is such a thing - so tropical it is). On formal and semi formal nights you wear your very nicest clothes you brought on the cruise (tux, suit, sport coat, dress shirt & tie, polo). On the other 4 nights you wear "nice" clothes (polo shirts and dockers/slacks).

THere has been some discussion about shorts on tropical/mexicalli. It seems like there was a change in the last 12 months on this issue.

I'm one who no longer brings a suit for formal nights, so I wear a shirt and tie. THat being said, I would NEVER wear shorts to dinner in the main dinning rooms (we all have are limits:D ) unless specifically requested.

Shorts and tee shirts are ok for lunches in the main dinning rooms.

I may be going blind and stupid, but I thought I read where Disney posted no shorts in the dining room???
Am I going nuts?
REALLY....... I thought I read no shorts in the dining room!?

I have two boys going on this cruise, 9 & 14...I went out and bought them a pair of pants from the local Kohl's...Big Deal about $14.00 for the pants.....I like when boys dress up, every now and then....
Hey, what's $14.00 bucks, when the cruise cost me $$$$$$$$
Wow, I just thought of what I paid for this cruise!...Ok, I need to sit down now!!!!

You are right...there are no shorts in the dining rooms. I think that rules is waived, though for very young children. We were told by DCL CM's that shorts were perfectly acceptable in the dining room on Tropical night.

We just got our cruise documents recently. The cruise documents are worded "we request that you do not wear shorts in the dining rooms" or something to that effect. Which is very different than "shorts are not permitted in the dining rooms." Dress of "young children" is at the parents discretion.

I think this is one of those areas where everyone needs to use their best judgement, as does Disney. I'm sure other cruisers have seen those lovely Tommy Bahama silk shorts that are beautiful, long, and a lot nicer than two year old casual lowriding capris. Doesn't seem fair that someone can stroll into the dining room in faded cheap capris and be fine, and someone can wear those shorts (I lust for those shorts, but where would you ever wear them!) and be "breaking rules." Can't be that knees aren't permitted, as my "dining attire" is a couple of above the knee skirts - and I've seen plenty of semiformals that show plenty of leg. Likewise, there are tank tops (another Disney formal dining no no, for the most part) and then there are some lovely sleeveless blouses - that some might call tank tops.
