We are using the ME service and will have a stroller as part of our luggage. Will ME transport this as luggage or are we going to have to go pick it up?

It all depends.

Are you checking the stroller with your other luggage at the ticket counter/curbside, or are you gate-checking it? If you're checking it in just like a regular piece of checked luggage, then YES, DME will transport it for you just like any other piece of your checked luggage. JUST MAKE SURE TO PUT THE DME TAG ON IT. Also do yourself a favor -- when you check in at the DME center after arriving at MCO, let them know that one of your pieces of checked luggage (for them to transport) is a stroller, as I imagine an unorthodox piece like that could slip through their system of pulling bags before they get to the baggage claim carousel.

If you're gat checking the stroller (that is, using it in your home airport and checking it at the gate itself), then immediately after you leave the aircraft wait inside the jetway for your stroller to be brought up to you. When you get to your DME bus, fold it up and the driver will be happy to stow it under the bus in the cargo hold (along with your carry-ons, if you wish); you will get it back as soon as you get off the bus at your resort.

I hope this helps answer your question.

I was planning on checking it in like a piece of luggage, but I was not aware you could check it in the way you are saying.

Do I just tell them (the airline) that I want the stroller immediately after landing?

Sorry not a very experienced flyer.

I have done this many times with my boys. You can attach a claim ticket to the stroller and walk right down to the entrance of the plane, and leave it right there. You won't be the only one for sure as this is where people also leave their wheelchairs. The airline stores it for you, and it will be waiting right there when you get off. Very simple, and it makes life much easier when trying to get little ones through the airport.

The obvious advantage to gate-checking the stroller is you can actually use it in both airports.

You don't need to do anything in advance. All you have to do is notify a gate agent when you get to the gate your flight is leaving from. Simply tell them you are gate-checking the stroller. They'll have you fill out a little tag, and you'll then attach the tag to the stroller. THAT'S ALL!

When it's time to board, you wheel the stroller onto the jetway but you stop as soon as you get to the aircraft, in the part of the jetway where it gets wider and round. Fold it up and leave it there, then proceed onto the aircraft.
A ramper (ground crew/luggage handler) will get it and take it outside/downstairs to the aircraft's cargo hold.

When you leave the aircraft, step aside as soon as you get into the jetway, and wait for your stroller to be brought up there; the rampers will leave them there for people to get themselves. There's only one exterior door in the jetway, so you'll know where to look for someone coming in with your stroller. Don't worry, if you're flying into and out of MCO you won't be the only party with a gate-checked stroller, trust me!

I'm a very experienced flyer but in May was the first time we flew with our 2 pre-schoolers, so gate-checking was completely new to me, too. It's a breeze. Like I said, just tell them at the gate you want to gate-check the stroller and they'll guide you through the rest. No worries. HAVE FUN!
