Can I have ME take my luggage while I rent a car?

In a word, no. DME has made it very clear that they are not a luggage transfer service. If you put those yellow luggage tags on your bags you had best hop on the bus. If you don't check in, and have your voucher scanned, your bags won't be released to make the trip to WDW from MCO. One of the reasons (or at least a lot of people believe this) Disney started DME was to keep people from renting cars and heading off to those 'other' parks. It would defeat the purpose if they allowed people to just use it to transfer luggage while they rented a car.

No you can't do that. You could always take DME and rent a car on property.

If there are several people in your party you can send one person to rent the car and the others can take ME....the person who rents cannot use their luggage tags (the yellow ME stickers they send), but if you are under 2 bags per person others can put their extra tags on your bag/s and take with them. This is something we considered for our trip (decided against getting a car) as DDs wheelchair would not have fit in a rental with all the luggage as well.
