Ok, so we are getting closer to deciding that dvc and buying 150 ssr points does make sense for us, however now is not the time. DH is switching jobs, we just bought a house in June, etc and we know we are taking a Royal Caribbean Cruise in Jan of 05 or sometime shortly there after as we have an amazing amount on onboard ship credit with them for rebooking a cruise while we were sailing with them last Jan....so if we wait until say Aug 04 or a few months there after to buy in is that when our use year starts? and how does that affect us? We will be primarily traveling in Oct and Jan so will Aug be a good time or should we wait until even later to buy? I don't full understand this use year thing even though I've read it several times. Thanks again...this board is wonderful!

Disney allocates a certain number of points to each Use Year to balance the resort use load. When you buy, you may be given a choice of 2 or 3 different Use Year months. The Use Year month might not be exactly the month during which you make your purchase. That said, August and September (or, in a pinch, October) are perfectly good Use Years for October and January travel. Good luck!

I concur with rocketriter's comments on the Use Year.

However be aware that the prices may change over the next 6 months. Right now the base price is $89 per point. Two promotions are available: A flat discount of $5 off per point (net $84 pp) or you can get $10 back per point (net $79) if you sell back your first year's points.

The latter situation (selling back 1st year's points) is DVC's Magical Beginnings program. That option WILL likely be available to you whenever you choose to buy. But be aware that you DO pay the annual maintenance fee on points sold back via Magical Beginnings.

To borrow your example, if you purchase in August '04 and use MB, you don't have any points to use until Aug '05, but you would begin to pay dues on your 150 points immediately, and begin making monthly payments on the financed amount of your purchase.

The $5 discount is likely to disappear sometime between now and May when the resort opens. And there is no guarantee that the base price of $89 per point won't be increased as well.

Just more for you to consider...
