MDE and Magic Bands

I booked our trip for Feb 2019 on August 1.

However, it says our magic bands are active. I’m assuming the numbers associated to the magic bands are the same as our trip in 2016.

Why have they stayed active since 2016? Will the band numbers remain the same and we just get new ones in the mail closer to arrival date? Or will new numbers be issued?

The bands stay active unless you deactivate them. You can do that on MDE if you want, or you can keep them all active. Your new bands will have different numbers. If you do not want new bands, you can decline them under the customization option on MDE.

Since the old bands remain active, many people will bring them and have multiple bands for their trip.

You can choose different colors to coordinate with your outfits if you like.

Or, if they're the newer style (I can't remember when exactly they changed), you can remove the center puck and put it into a different colored band.
