MDA telethon weekend...

is this a big deal in anyones neighborhood?

we have about 20,000 people in our little city (not counting the college kids - Hartwick and State College, Oneonta) and our local cable station runs a live remote with "local cut-aways"...it is so lame to watch that it is addicting....

Our first DD starting paying attention when she was 3 1/2 and wanted to go down and "pick up a canister" to collect from our neighbors to help the kids she saw on TV...

...she has become so committed to this cause that she has collected every year since (now 7 1/2) and has raised over $1,000 through her collections...knowing that all of the money she collects will help kids here in our area (many that she has met hanging out at the telethon)...this year she has had 3 lemonade stand sales already and has raised almost $100 and when we got home from dinner tonight we found a check on the door from a neighbor who was not going to be home this weekend ,but knew that DD would be collecting for the MDA and wanted to give her the donation!!

...I love small towns!! and I am so proud of my little girl that she really understands what she is doing...just had to share

I always like to watch the MDA Marathon and I have always respected Jerry Lewis for making such a huge commitment to MDA. I like to donate each year.

Love the telethon and cry buckets when I watch it. When I was younger, say 8-10, I tried for two years to get stuff started in our neighborhood and nobody got it. When I was in high school helped out at the local calling center for 2 years because a close high school friend's cousin had MD-----watch it every year, donate, and cry. On a sad note, poor Jerry Lewis saw him the other night on Larry King live while flipping through channels.....he still has his wit and charm though.....

I have benefited from this telethon along with my brother who died last month. He did not die from Muscular Dystrophy, but a massive heart attack.

I think the best thing I ever received from the MDA telethon was "my stick" it is actually a "reacher" it helps me pick things up from the floor when I drop them. It looks like a big pair of wood siccors. I ahve also been given leg braces, and went to conventions with other people who have this disease.

I know many of you contribute in many ways. Thank You so much. Hopefully one day I will be able to run with Seth in the yard, take a dip in the pool, and walk up stairs with no problems. At that time it will be people like your daughter that made it happen. Gold bless her!

What an excellent thing your DD has started and continued. When we get our youth interested in helping, our future is brighter for all people.

Back in my College days I first started working as a volunteer for the MDA telethon. Over the years I have answered phones, stuffed envelopes, helped with carnivals, etc. It truly feels good to help out wherever possible.

When I answered the phones I often took donations in memory of a patient. Those calls were the most heartfelt ones since they were often from family or friends giving back a little of what MDA gave them over the years.

This year I will be watching since I didn't get a chance to sign up for shifts. My donation will be there, as will my time during later events.
