SAN FRANCISCO - McDonald’s Corp. was hit with a lawsuit Thursday accusing the fast-food giant of failing to reduce fat in the cooking oil used in its french fries and other foods.

Oak Brook, Ill.-based McDonald’s pledged in September 2002 to switch to a lower-fat oil by February, 2003.

The suit, filed in federal court on behalf of a California woman, says McDonald’s has not disclosed “to the public in an effective manner that it had not switched to a new, healthier cooking oil.”

The restaurant chain had announced it planned to cut the trans fat levels in its fried foods. But McDonald’s has delayed the plan, citing concerns of product quality and customer satisfaction.

McDonald’s spokeswoman Lisa Howard said the company could not comment on the complaint’s specific allegations because it had not seen the lawsuit.

Howard said McDonald’s has reduced trans fatty acid levels in its McNuggets and other chicken dishes.

“In February 2003, we made a broad public statement that the change in our cooking oil was taking longer than anticipated and would be delayed,” she said. “We continue to work hard to achieve our ambitious goals for reduction of TFAs in our cooking oil.”

Heart-clogging trans fat is made when manufacturers add hydrogen to vegetable oil — a process called hydrogenation.

 Aren't these people going to stop suing fast food places anytime soon??

These suits are dumb. People are gaining weight because they choose to eat what they do. The restaurant doesn't control the people.
Unfortunately I think now that one person has sued, lots of places will be sued, just because people will think it's the cool thing to do. Or an easy way to make some money.

Not as long as they can get away with it. Unbelieveable!!

Plueeze! Does anyone order fries thinking they are healthy? Oil is oil...it is all 100% fat.

I agree! I've been dieting for 3 months now and Fries are fattening PERIOD!

This lady should just avoid McDonalds and not even go to it if she has a problem with fatty foods. Sounds like she is one of those people that would even have a problem with the salads.

Would you believe Krispy Kreme doughnuts have fat in them? I was shocked! Shocked, I tell you! ;)

::yes:: I'm filing a lawsuit tomorrow!:teeth:

I'm with ya! Can I file separate lawsuits for glazed, chocolate glazed, creme filled, raspberry filled and chocolate glazed with sprinkles? I'm sure those sprinkles are loaded with something toxic!

There has to be some legal formula for damages...

number of sprinkles X grams of fat X billable hours X the price of tea in China = $4 bazillion

Mind you, with attorney's fees, that probably comes out to $3.75 for me and the rest for the attorney. But that'll buy me more doughnuts!

This sounds like it could be a nationwide class action suit.

What about the candybar makers, the other fast food restaurants, the chairs for being so comfortable that you can sit down for more than a few minutes. The tv manufactorers and the stations themselves for making enjoyable shows that make us sit down and watch.

And we won't get into the computer manufactorers, the internet servers, and heaven forbid Pete, for making this enjoyable so we sit down and play here instead of doing something physical.

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: How true!

I think we should make it a class-action lawsuit!!;) ;)

Let's see... McDonald's serves french fries that are fried in grease and are fattening. :scratchin :scratchin I know... How about if I don't eat them?:confused3 Oh, what the heck... it's easier to file a lawsuit! :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1

Umm it's oil. It's made of fat. How can you have a low fat oil?

I realize that later in the article they talk about trans fats and such. But this struck me as wierd sounding.

I don't look as good in a bathing suit as I'd like to. How about suing McDonalds and the pool and the bathing suit maker. McDonalds for those pesky fries, the pool for causing me to suffer emotional harm for not providing a private pool just for me, and the suit maker for not making a suit which makes everyone look like a swim suit model.

Now as for Krispy Kremes...don't NOBODY mess with my Krispy Kremes. I'll beat anyone down with a stick that messes with my Krispy Kremes!!:p
