I admire both of the candidates.

It is now coming out that Obama reached out to McCain at 8:30 this morning to make the suggestion that as senators, they issue a joint statement that they are going to work together on the economic crisis (per CNN).

Both senators, who have votes on Bush's bailout program, agreed to work together to resolve the issue.

It really doesn't matter who called whom first, I admire both of the candidates to put politics aside to work on the credit crisis.

Apparently both of them wanted to get their joint statement out before Bush's speech tonight.

The Obama campaign said Obama had called McCain around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday to propose that they issue a joint statement in support of a package to help fix the economy as soon as possible. McCain called back six hours later and agreed to the idea of the statement, the Obama campaign said. McCain's statement was issued to the media a few minutes later.

There is something going on here. This strikes me as a bit of a panic move.

Were the congressional hearings yesterday a harbinger of something worse to come?

Everything I've been reading all over the 'net suggests that "we the people" are not for this bailout. Maybe its the strings that the administration wants to go along with it - having the secretary in total control - and he would not be held accountable by congress or the courts. I'd have to find the exact quote.

This doesn't seem like a smart move. Change the debate topic on Friday to the economy and tell us how you'd (they) would FIX IT!!!!

(CNN) — John McCain announced Wednesday he is suspending his campaign on Thursday morning and returning to Washington to work on the financial crisis. He also called on the Commission on Presidential Debates to postpone the first faceoff until Congress has completed work on a bailout package.

“Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative. I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me,” he said in New York, according to a transcript of the remarks released by his campaign.

“I am calling on the President to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem,” he said.

Obama's campaign said that the Democratic nominee had called McCain at 8:30 Wednesday morning to ask him if he would "join in issuing a joint statement outlining their shared principles and conditions for the Treasury proposal and urging Congress and the White House to act in a bipartisan manner to pass such a proposal." They also said that McCain returned the call at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon and agreed to join him in issuing such a statement, and that the two campaigns are currently "working together on the details."

In his statement, McCain said he was directing his campaign “to work with the Obama campaign and the commission on presidential debates to delay Friday night’s debate until we have taken action to address this crisis.

Americans across our country lament the fact that partisan divisions in Washington have prevented us from addressing our national challenges. Now is our chance to come together to prove that Washington is once again capable of leading this country.”

Rather than scrapping Friday night's debate, the focus ought to be changed from foreign policy to economic policy.

Btw, the debate is in Mississippi, not Moscow. McCain can use one of his private jets to get there and then fly back to Washington after the debate.

This is an excellent move and really do not think it has anything to do with canceling the debates.

If that really happened, it is going to backfire on McCain that Obama tried to reach across party lines and McCain snubbed him, taking the credit himself.

Makes him look a bit like a backstabber.

Funny, how this comes out the day Obama surges in the polls. Obama has a clear advantage on the economic front.

Hopefully, they will both work together.

It has everything to do with cancelling the debates - McCain said it himself. He is suspending his campaign and the debates.
